Owner description: The cathedral of Notre-Dame in Bayeux is an impressive building, a mix of Romanesque in the 11th century crypt and glorious Gothic in the 13th-century nave. In the 11th century after the Conquest of England by Duke William of Normandy in 1066, ties with England were strong. You'll see a reference to the turbulent past above the south transept portal where sculpted scenes show the life of Thomas Becket, the Archbishop of Canterbury who was assassinated in Canterbury Cathedral on the orders of King Henry II of England. The Bayeux Tapestry was kept here from the 11th to the 18th centuries, probably displayed for the first time on the day the cathedral was consecrated in 1077 in the presence of William the Conqueror.

Lovely cathedral. We were lucky enough to hear a small orchestra play and the sound was magnificent.

“Great Gothic Architecture”

The outside of the building is so ornate and massive it commands serious attention. The stain glass is brilliant.

What a glorious church. Look up and enjoy the gargoyles and menacing statues keeping their eyes fixed on those below. Enjoy the lovely paintings and carvings.

Gorgeous grounds, nice narrative of the history of the cathedral, interesting crypts. Go on a Sunday to hear the organ, terrific experience.

“Impressive!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 2, 2012

No tourist trap, its a real church and you can spend as much time as you like. The stained glass windows are really impressive. I think the organ player practices at lunch so we got a free concert too. The lady who runs the little shop doesn't speak much English, but that doesn't stop her being extremely friendly. The place would be packed in Paris and is empty here. Check out the huge tree in the back.
