This is a terrific small hotel, located about 15 minutes walk from central Bayeux. It has plenty of parking and easy access to the main roads, but is very quiet and charming. The grounds are lovely - ponds, geese/ducks, flowers. The staff is friendly and very welcoming. There's a very nice restaurant if you don't feel like driving or walking to town, and all the expected conveniences (WiFi, breakfast). The location is about half an hour from the D-Day beaches, and no more than two hours from most other major Normandy sites. And of course Bayeux itself is a good destination with plenty of restaurants and its own sights to see.

We stayed at the Chateau for 2 nights while visiting Normandy area. It is about a 10 minute walk into town or to the train station. We had a large room with a seating area which definitely needed updating. The beds pushed together to make a king size bed seemed old and were uncomfortable. The bedding also seemed dated. The rug needed replacing. While everything was clean, it just seemed old. The bathroom on the other hand was updated, spacious and nice. The room itself had nice amenities to include wine, calvados, snacks, and nice bath products. Don't even think of using the hairdryer!!! I tried to dry my hair, but gave up the airflow was so weak. Avoid washing hair if you need a hairdryer.

Breakfast was fine, not great, but fine. No, it was not included and seemed a bit pricey at 14 euro per person, but it had eggs (you boil yourself), pancakes (you make yourself), yogurts, meats, cheeses, breads, fruits, juices, cereal, bacon and potatoes. Basically everything you need.

Dinner in the dining room however was delicious!!!! We didn't even know they served dinner. When we checked in they asked if we would like to have a table for dinner. The first night we ate in town, but the second night at the Chateau. Make sure you let them know early you want a table...don't think you can just walk in last minute. We didn't know what to expect, but we walked into a beautifully elegant dining room with formally set tables. Every table was occupied. The food was excellent as was the service. There was one young man waiting on the 8-10 tables and he was working extremely hard. Sometimes had to ask for things twice, but he had his hands full so it was okay. I don't know if the dinner is only for hotel guests as I don't see it listed in the Bayeux restaurants, but it was great!!!!

The Chateau public areas and grounds were beautiful. Just the room we had needed updating, not sure about other rooms. I read about the "not too friendly woman"...I know exactly who they are referring to. Please know she was fine, but not overly friendly and outgoing...think it's just her personality. Everyone else was very nice.

Personally I would have preferred to stay right in town for convenience, but this was a nice alternative and I would stay here again.

So who books a chateau stay and wants to stay in a restored barn? Tile floors, modern decor and the shower and sink on the second floor? And despite a brief tour with a "not too friendly woman, received no direction for how to work the heaters? I had hastily changed my reservation from a high end hotel to the more affordable chateau upon learning that we had another wedding to fund for one of our daughter's, so missed that our accommodations were in the restored barn and not the main house. We decided to make the best of it as we did not want this reality to negatively impact our vacation. Unfortunately, after the worst night's sleep on the a very substandard mattress in a cold room, we asked to be moved which was accommodated without hesitation. We were given a two bedroom suite and would you believe, found ourselves on another bad mattress? Luckily, the beds in room two, worked out but I would have to say that until those mattresses are changed, I would look for another place to stay. The grounds and chateau were beautiful, and most of the staff friendly, but I agree with another reviewer...we did not feel like welcome guests in this beautiful setting...it was missing the warmth that can only be delivered by hosts that value our patronage.

Neither my wife nor I took any photographs here. That is hard to understand as it is a beautiful location ..............but it somehow lacks heart & soul.

As we parked the car, the cows in the field beside nodded their greeting and we hoped for a very pleasant and memorable overnight stay. We had a good night’s sleep in very comfortable room for a price of €135 – not too bad as it was a final night in France and we were treating ourselves. Breakfast was not included and a really bog-standard breakfast of a help-yourself boiled egg with add-ons was another €28. There was a lack of any real atmosphere and; despite the efforts of the cows and all the wild life, we never felt loved or wanted – unconsciously neither of us felt a need to return with some photographic memory and that is a shame.

We booked rooms 11, 12 and 14 on the top floor of the chateau for 3 nights over Easter. Nicely decorated, a very comfortable bed, and clean. Not large rooms but enough character and nice views of the grounds. The managers (owners?) and staff were friendly and helpful. The main public rooms are really lovely, the grounds well kept and the ducks, geese and swans a delight. Breakfast was a bit Fawltyesque at times and there never seemed to be a time when the buffet was fully stocked, but the 'interactive' menu - boil your own eggs, make your own pancakes, squeeze your own oranges, etc - was fun.

The hotel's location on the edge of town made it easy to drive to, parking in the grounds was easy with more than enough space (compare that with the town centre hotels and busy narrow main streets). The 10-minute walk into town was easy on empty narrow streets with a pavement, and all of the town's sites and restaurants walkable.

Satnav note. The street is Rue de Bellefontaine, don't forget the 'de'!

The only problem we had was with the original booking process, which had made me a little wary about our stay. I'm more than happy we persevered!

Room Tip: I don't think there are any bad rooms. Price determines size, and the duplex building is modern...

Initial impressions of this hotel are good. The approach shows the lovely building off at its best, complete with sweeping gravel drive and a pond full of various ducks and swans. We received a very warm welcome at reception and were allocated room 15 on the third floor of the main building with the benefit of a triple aspect. We were glad to be on the top floor as workmen were renovating parts of the ground floor and using a lot of power tools.

The room was huge compared with a UK hotel, with separate sitting area. The bed was on the firm side and we found the lack of proper reading lights a bit awkward. Our bathroom came with a large modern shower but really needed a good deep clean. Mold had taken hold in the silicon around the shower tray. A lot of money had obviously been spent on fixtures and fittings but we got the impression that it wasn't being maintained. Overall however, we were very pleased given the price we were paying as part of a Brittany Ferries package.

Breakast unfortunately did not live up to our hopes. We went down at about 8.30 am but on each occasion found they had run out of things and they were not replenished. One morning it was orange juice, the next bacon, the next bread. Fortunately we were served by a lovely young French girl whose pleasant demeanour compensated for the less than memorable food....it was adequate but no more.

The hotels location is excellent....just off the 'ring' road (which was quieter than many country lanes where we live) and an easy 15 minutes walk into the centre of Bayeux.

Overall it was a very nice hotel with a real sense of occasion but slightly marred by some little issues. We would go back but remember we were paying a very competitive price...I'm not sure I would be so forgiving had I paid the standard room rate.

Room Tip: The main buildings rooms are very varied and have more character than the annex. Room 15 seemed a n...

We stayed 2 nights at Hotel Chateau de Bellefontaine in March 2014 and it was wonderful. Our rooms were located in the lovely guest building made up of the "Duplex Suites", and featured beautiful views from the enormous glass doors and windows that opened to the gorgeous spring time weather and views of the lively pond, full of pairs of a variety of waterfowl sedately cruising the waterway, and perennial blooms. Quality shower and bathroom with robes, quality mattresses, bedding, stocked mini-bar and small refrigerator, iPod dock, large flat screen TV. Wifi is offered in the beautiful salon of the main house, as well as use of the hotel's Mac. We did not dine at the hotel, but did enjoy a bottle of the delicious locally produced Calvados in the elegant salon the first night before walking into the village of Bayeux for dinner. Set just outside the center of town on acreage of green meadows and it's own vegetable gardens, the hotel is approx 15 minutes walk to center of village, along quiet streets; there's one intersection to cross where the hotel road crosses the grass lined divided avenue, but it has a pedestrian crossing area to make it easy, and the small amount of traffic we encountered(in March) is used to stopping for pedestrians crossing this. The "country" feeling of the setting was a welcome change from the bustle of Paris and other urban places. The hotel staff also calls the local taxi company if needed-they arranged for a taxi to pick us up and return us to the train station, a short drive (and around 5-6 euros) from the hotel. The staff of Hotel Chateau de Bellefontaine is professional, efficient, courteous and accommodating. We highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting the Normandy region.

Room Tip: Ask for the "duplex suites" to accommodate more than 2 people (we had 3 people).
