“Avoid this restaurant”
Reviewed February 8, 2014

We never got to eat the food in this restaurant as we walked out before ordering! We arrived one wet night, tried to sit down at the wooden tables near the entrance but were ushered into the main restaurant with white table cloths and well dressed waiters. All we wanted was a light one course meal so we asked for the "a la carte" menu which was brought - however, the waiter insisted we have 2 courses which we didn't want - so back to the original wooden tables! We ordered drinks - the beer and wine were brought promptly and so was the FLAT Perrier mineral water in a glass - the usual custom in France is to bring the small bottle and for the waiter to pour the water into the glass at the table. Neither the waiter nor the manager were helpful - in fact quite the opposite. There were 2 in our party who did not speak French but even they got the gist of what the manager was saying! So I would definitely not recommend this restaurant!

“Good food and service”
Reviewed January 11, 2014

We ate lunch and supper at Le Taverne des Ducs on the day we arrived in Bayeux. We enjoyed the food and found the staff to be pleasant, friendly, and helpful. The head waiter used his phone to help us make contact with our B & B. For supper we ordered the plat du jour; the meal was very good and the price reasonable. We were very satisfied with everything about the Taverne.

“Lunch at a Bayeux Restaurant”

Onion soup and 3 cheese plate was great. Wait staff was a bit aloof and not very friendly... maybe it's the French waiter thing.

“Food Fair”
Reviewed October 31, 2013

This less than intimate restaurant feels like something in a US mall., too big, too bright, too brassy. Menu trie to handle all nationalities. Service was ok but felt no rapport to staff. That said the fish & chips was good & the onion soup ok. After a day on the Normandy Beaches, this restaurant had an Ompa Band & was celebrating Octoberfest. Seemed a little uncomfortable after a somber day of hearing about WWII. There must be better restaurants in Bayeaux.

“Great find in Bayeux!”
Reviewed October 30, 2013

We passed this restaurant each evening when travelling into Bayeux and thought it looked nice. For our last evening in the town, we were struggling to find restaurants that opened before 7pm, but noticed that this one was and so decided to pay a visit.

Great in that there is plenty of parking directly outside, unlike further into the centre of Bayeux, where a free parking space is more difficult to locate.

The menu was very varied, with a good choice of meat and fish dishes and plenty of daily "specials". The tables were very nicely set with good quality table linen. We were seated at about 7pm, lots of empty tables, but by 8.30pm, the place was pretty full (Wednesday evening).

We didn't eat from the set menu, prices for main coursese were about 9 euros to 25 euros and varied from omelettes to steak and sea food dishes. Very happy with the quality and presentation of my meal (sirloin steak with pepper sauce).

My husband had duck breast with a honey and lime sauce. beautiful presentation which I could not fault. Service was timely and courteous. Menus were available in English and staff were able to translate the specials.

We selected the house red which was 11 euros for 50cl.

If I had to criticise any aspect of this restaurant! it would be the lighting that was rather on the bright side! but that said! we were able to read menus without the old reading specs and also could fully enjoy the beautiful presentation of our meals.

Dessert for me was St Eve, a speciality of Bayeux. it was a cross between almond macaroon and meringue filled with a delicious white (chocolate?) praline and a creme anglaise sauce. Absolutely magnificent!

The bill was accurate and all in all, really enjoyed this experience. Surprised to see how mixed the reviews for this reaturant are given that it seems a popular place to eat and how positive our own experience was.
