“Get in the Christmas spirit!”
Reviewed December 27, 2013

This pretty town offers you and your family the ideal break to get you in the Christmas spirit. I took my family before Christmas for 2 nights and found a delightful town with lots of lights and places to settle in and watch the world go by with a hot chocolate for the kids and perhaps something stronger for Mum and Dad!
The market itself in Place Rihour is small and quite busy... don't plan on doing your xmas shopping here! But the Grande Place with the ferris wheel is a must and well worth queueing for. The buildings are lit and the whole place feels welcoming and very festive.
The old town is worth a few hour's strolling with mostly high-end clothes shops and restaurants. There's a flea market on Sundays too. There seems to be a lovely creperie on every street!
Rue de Bethune for more affordable shopping, Galleries LaFayette, and a couple of cinemas showing VO (Version Original - in English) movies.
Give Euralille near the Eurostar station a miss though. That could be anywhere.

Eurostar takes 1.5 hrs and you can walk into the town easily saving a cab fare.

Do it. We had a lovely Christmassy time!

“Nice historical place, home to the christmas market”
Reviewed December 17, 2013

The Place Rihour is where the Palace Rihour built by the duke of Burgundy is located. The palace is now reduced to a shadow of it's past, but nevertheless is a very impressive structure. The Christmas market is located next door. The Lille tourist office is also housed on the grounds of the palace.

“Lacking in substance”
Reviewed December 10, 2013

Not at all what we expected having visited Lincoln Christmas market last weekend. The Lille market consists of about 80 small wooden chalets crammed onto a car park with a couple of fairground rides in adjoining squares. Easy to see in a couple of hours.

“nice day out.”
Reviewed December 7, 2013

We were offered a P & O special offer, ferry to france £29 return and get 6 bottles of wine free....just before xmas this was a no brainer! We decided to make a day of it and go to the Lille christmas market. Car journey from Calais is approx 1 hour and could not be more straight forward, ok we did have sat nav but it just 2 straight roads! Lots of one way way streets in lille but head for centre and you will pass a few car parks. Parking on roads around market are free, but for 2 hours only.
There is a large ferris wheel in the centre which, compared to uk prices, is a snip. 4 euros each and you do get several revolutions for this and great view. Compare this to the 2 revolutions on the hyde park wheel for, a pre booked, price of £7.50 each. A lovely tree is also un the centre and are a beautiful spectacle and definite photo opportunity at night. The market stalls, whilst pretty and sell good souvenirs, are few. You can walk around the stalls in an hour (1.5 hours max). So if this is all you have gone for, as I had, it is a long journey for that.
Several bars and restuarants around the square that have partial outdoor seating ( parasols, outdoor heaters and gazeebo style sides) are very nice but if you are not a smoker, like me, prepare to eat in a fug of smoke as they do not seem to have the same smoking laws as uk. Seating inside restuarants are smoke free but less atmospheric.
All in all it was a pleasant day out but not really worth the long journey. Probably wouldnt go again.

“Tourist Info - not just Lille”
Reviewed December 5, 2013

The main tourist info centre is in Place Rihour, next to the Grande Placae and with lots of tourist restaurants (but see review of Cafe de la Paix, Cafe Flore also worth a look). The tourist pass we found expensive so don't buy it unless you're looking to use the bus tour, transport and local museums enough to justify it. Do think about going to Roubaix but only for La Piscine one of our favourite Art Museums anywhere - only half an hour by metro plus a less than ten minute walk. Also Lens for the new Louvre. Lille is a fine city and with these additional trips fully justifies at least three nights - but do plan your days as the museums/galleries etc don't all close on the same day.
