“perfect location in Lille but very small room”
Reviewed November 25, 2012

the hotel Kanai is nicely located.
right in the center of the city, afew minutes from both stations.
there are 2 issues with this hotel
the first one is no lift so if you are coming with luggage it's not easy but most of the time the staff is eager to help to carry it with you.
the second one is the size of the room, if you have a big suit case forget about it, you won't be able to open it except on your bed
the bathroom is small but you have what you need
staff are extremely friendly.
the breakfast is not with a huge choice but everything what they have is fresh (which is the most important)

A fifteen minute walk from the Eurostar station. This used to be the hotel de france, now Kookai has the ground floor and the hotel the upper floors. We were welcomed by a frienly and thorough receptionist who answered all our questions about the town and then showed us up to our room. We paid extra for one of their best rooms (203), which had a bid bed, one chair, a nespresso machine which couldn't make tea, and a small shower room with w/c. The bed was great and the view from the windows over the "pedestrianised" town centre was panoramic, in the evening light the people hurrying about their business looked charmingly Lowryesque. A little heater hung from the ceiling brought the room up to an acceptable temperature quickly.

After what had been a good nights sleep, at 5:30 in the morning it became apparent that the town centre was not as pedestrianised as it looked, with street cleaning vans and delivery vans preventing any meaningful sleep before breakfast. Breakfast (extra) was only OK.

The following night the town centre was busier, and a lone looner spent the small hours screaming abuse at passers by, so that we had not slept for long before the 5:30 shift arrived and woke us up again. We obviously looked like we had not slept, because after breakfast the manageress offered us a move to a room at the back (207). This was slightly bigger and had a second chair and a bigger shower room, but the shower room had no extract (but you could open a huge window if you could stand the cold. Both rooms had sliding doors to the shower room so we could smile and wave at each other while we sat on the loo. Be sure you know the person you are sharing with well.

So how to mark a hotel with all these niggling issues? The people running it were so nice it has to be 4 out of 5, but I hope they have sortd some of the stuff out before we go back

Room Tip: rooms on the front are noisy overnight

The staff were friendly. The hotel is right in the heart of the shopping centre.Rooms were clean and fairly spacious. No good for the elderly as there's no lift and the stairs are hard on the legs if your on the third floor as we were, but good exercise. The coffee machine in the room is rubbish and needs a kettle for us tea drinkers.Tv is mostly French but hey we are in France. All in all would Reccomend.

Excellent location for central restaurants, etc.good value room. Nice breakfast (9eu). No lift. Arrival by car difficult .Hotel has a deal with a nearby basement shop carpark. Near tube station. Stupid nexpresso m/c; kettle would be cheaper and more usful.

We stayed at this hotel for just one night. The welcome we got from Sophie at reception was superb. She was friendly, professional and helpful and provided a comprehensive overview of all the essentials - including the parking arrangement with a nearby park under the shopping centre across the street. The route to it by car was a bit complicated because of one-way systems but Sophie's directions were faultless. Though we conversed almost all of the time in French Sophie and her colleague also have excellent English (and perhaps more languages). She pointed out the main points of interest on the city map as she gave it to us - excellent. Our room on the second floor front was large and comfortable with a table and chairs as well as the bed and a desk. There was good air conditioning. The free WiFi was effective and simple to connect. The location is excellent as it is among the shops and restaurants and only 5 min walk from the main square - Place Charles de Gaulle. De Gaulle was born in Lille.

We were wakened by the street cleaning machine below - but that is not the hotel's fault and we soon dozed over again.

We looked for a nice hotel in Lille, but not an expensive one. We found this hotel and booked 2 rooms - one single and one for 2 adults, 1 child and a baby.
The location is great, in the center of the center...great staff, the hotel יhas been renovated a few years ago so the rooms are modern and very clean.
go for it!
