“Belated review”
Reviewed January 13, 2013

I meant to post a few words about this hotel when I'd visited at the end of Nov but Xmas etc. put it to the back of my mind.Hotel ambience was fabulous...the staff very friendly and efficient and our room was warm ,clean and comfortable.Booked through Travel Republic and didn't suffer at all for our "BargainRate". We had a small problem dining at the Estaminet (our meal didn't come!) but we left the restaurant and spoke to Reception and were very pleased with their "Customer is always right" attitude. As well as being served our meal "on the house" I found a hand written apology and a box of chocolates in our room later that night. So,from our viewpoint, Well done Hermitage Gantois...we were most impressed.

We arrived at the hotel mid morning (in the pouring rain) and were immediately greeted by an oasis of calm. The staff on reception spoke exceptional English, which was a great help as they could not find our reservation! Thankfully there were still 2 rooms available, so they were able to squeeze us in. The room was not ready (which was no great surprise) but we were told to make ourselves comfortable in the bar, which we did. The bar is expensive (€14 for a latte and hot chocolate) but it is very relaxing. After drying off we headed out for lunch and when we came back the room was ready. It was very nice, but the console table and bedside tables were very flimsy and cheap looking, which was a shame. The bedroom was at the back of the hotel, at the end of a corridor, so was very quiet- but there was absolutely no view. The bathroom was nice, but very small. The shower screen is fixed, which made it almost impossible to reach the taps. I am short, so had to step into the bath to reach the taps!
We stayed for 2 nights and had breakfast at the hotel (the agent paid for this as an apology for the confusion with the booking). Breakfast was very good, but I am not sure it was worth 21€pp.
Our return Eurostar was not until 8.30pm on the Sunday night and the hotel gave us a late check out of 1.30pm which helped as EVERYTHING in Lille is closed on a Sunday (which we hadn't realized). They kept our luggage for us and were very happy for us to enjoy the bar before heading to the station.
Every member of staff we came into contact with was extremely professional, very polite and spoke excellent English.
They are building a new wing with bedrooms and a spa in 2013, so this will be a great addition, but probably very expensive!
It was absolutely worth every penny and I would recommend it to anyone.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the back and away from the lifts.

This was our first visit to Lille and it certainly won't be our last. This was also our first visit to this hotel and we are certainly looking forward to going back there too. This is an impressive building having being converted from an ancient hospital with its own chapel and quiet courtyards - although a bit cold for sitting in December. The rooms are modern and stylish within the old building and our bathroom was a delight once web turned the radiator on. The main reception, lounge and bar are built in one of the courtyards that has been roofed over in glass and dressed for Christmas was a delightful entrance and enchanting place to sit and relax. The hotel is about fifteen to twenty minutes (interesting) walk for the old town and Grand Place but much nearer to the Palais des Beaux Arts, which is a must visit. We found it a perfect spot - close enough to the centre to be convenient but far enough to be quiet and apart. There is free wifi for the connected but do remember that you will need a different code for each day of your stay as access runs out after 24 hours.

This is, however, a five star hotel and it is therefore expensive. Our room was booked through a fabulous deal with Eurostar but I wouldn't pay full rack rate. The prices in the restaurant and bar are rather eye watering but you do get canapés with your drinks or friandises with your coffee. There are numerous restaurants and bars within easy walking distance and a bakery just outside the front door for your breakfast pain au chocolat, so you don't need to break the bank.

Knowing we had such a lovely place to return to after a heavy day shopping or visiting the galleries and museums made our winter break truly special. We will certainly be back.

Our family, two adults and our two daughters stayed here for 3 nights between Christmas and New Year, this is our 3rd visit to Lille, which I have to say I like better and better each time I stay.
We usually stay at The Carlton Hotel which I know is maybe alittle old fashioned but we have always enjoyed our stay. This year we thought we would try the L'Hermitage for a change.
The hotel is very well presented and has a nice seating area for an evening drink but for all its
stars it did not quite hit the mark.
The beds were comfortable and clean but the rooms a little sterile, our overhead shower had to be held up by hand and the water flashed from hot to cold constantly. They can be noisy, and 7 euros for water which should be provided is too much.Tea and Coffee are in the room but whether they are refilled is another matter. Though the hotel is not far from the centre it did seem inconvenient for popping back when tired.
Breakfast was not great, quite the worst we have had for a while ( and expensive ) and it is quite random whether you get to sit in the restaurant or are put in bistro which is basic, staff were as another said 50/50.
Looks are not everything. It does have history and the conversion is definately worth seeing.
The restaurant was nice but expensive.

This hotel is definitely a classy place to stay (with prices to match - although there are bargain offers to be had). More than that, being a conversion of a charitable monastic foundation which was used as a hospital right up to 1995, it gives you a sense of the city's history - though as with all such conversions, there's an element of incongruity. Still, it's nice to stay somewhere which is a tourist attraction in its own right (don't forget to explore the building), and the rooms have been very nicely done up while retaining a period atmosphere. It's a blissfully quiet and comfortable sleeping environment. The bar, in the roofed-in main courtyard, is pleasant though rather pricey. We also sampled the mid-range restaurant (estaminet) which was overall good, less so the tofu and lentils dish. (We were interested to find the French or perhaps ch'ti take on this, but clearly it was a case of 'if it's vegetarian it has to be tasteless'). We found the staff perfectly civil and courteous, much as you'd expect in a hotel of this type. The location is fine - walkable to/from the station, quite close to the Beaux-Arts. All in all a good place for a weekend away.

This hotel is fabulous. The building and inside courtyard are stunning and a wonderful setting for a relaxing holiday. I stayed with my mother for 2 nights and we ate in the hotel both nights (in L'Estaminet).

The staff were quite strange and we couldn't work them out. Some were friendly, warm and perfectly helpful but others were quite rude and at times made our trip unpleasant. This included in the restaurant where we were served half of our dessert and when we asked about the missing Speculoos they were unceremoniously dumped on the table as if we were asking for freebies. We had chosen the dessert specifically for the Speculoos that came with it! At the end of the meal, despite the restaurant only being half full we were handed our bill without being asked if we would like a coffee.

Depending on the barman, this is how we were treated in the beautiful bar also where we went for a pre and post dinner drink. At £16 a drink I expect a little bit of service and not to have to go to the bar to order when all the French people in the bar are served at their table. And yet at times there were bar staff that could not do enough for us.

I don't know if the treatment we received was because we were on a Railbookers deal but if they don't like people who take advantage of the offer they shouldn't offer it. It left a bit of a bitter taste in my mouth. It also didn't help that they charged something to my card once we had left without invoicing me or informing me. It was up to me to ask them. The charge was perfectly legitimate and they had forgotten to charge it to us when leaving. I would have had more respect for the hotel though if they had thought to contact/invoiced me.

Unfortunately the half o

My mother and I have just spent a few lovely days in Lille and stayed in the Hermitage. I have to say the building is wonderful. They have managed to blend the old with the new seamlessly.
The staff at the Hermitage were very helpful and courteous - service was impeccable.
We did not eat in the hotel restaurant during our stay as it was rather expensive, however we did enjoy a few drinks in the main bar. Again, this was not cheap and is my only gripe about the hotel. Like a few people have said before, the bar bill was more expensive than our stay!
The room we stayed in was lovely, with oak panelled walls, modern fixtures and fittings and comfortable beds. The toiletries were minimal, however of good quality.
I would definitely recommend this hotel for anyone who wants a short luxury break in a lovely city.
