The price for students is only 4 euro's. Not so much for this big museum. We spended there about 3 hours and still hadn't see everything, but went out because we were so hungry (so eat enough before you visit it..). My opinion is that the museum has a great collection due to its variety. There are midieval artefacts, stone sculptures of Rodin and other famous ones, a collection of pottery. A big collection of paintings from 1500 until contemporary art. And my special interest went to the big groundplans in the basement of cities like Lille, Ieper, Maastricht. They were made for military purposes and very nice to see how that cities looked like 1700. So for everyone there is something to see. Also the building is very nice, because of the restauration is has some modern parts. The only dissapointment is that some information on the audio guide was not available in dutch, perhaps in english everything was translated, but still... Make sure you have enough time for this, at least 3 hours is a minimum if you want to stroll around and have a look.

Poor lighting on some exhibits and not very helpful (rude) staff. That is a distinct contrast to the rest of the people we met in Lille. Signage and disabled access very poor. The disbaled ramp was topped of by a chained and padlocked gate. No concessions offered for disabled. Very poor hang in some rooms where it seemed to be more important to align the works rather than to hang them at an appropriate hight even though there was only a single row of reasonably small paintings.

Most of collection somewhat monumental and "samey". The small contemporary galery had a fine Mattieu and another galley displayed a great Van Gough picuture of cows. A small but intriguing display of ancient Egyptian artefacts, but once again, very poor labelling.

The large atrium contained an extensive work of a more modern nature. I think that was a temporary exhibition.

A lovely couple of hours spent wandering around the large halls in this art museum. Not everything to our taste but a pretty impressive collection nonetheless. Reasonable entry fee and we particularly found the old city models in the dark basement areas very interesting and atmospheric.

I understand the need to protect art form the impact of light damage but parts of the exhibition were so dark you couldn't read what the work was and missed all the detail in the piece.
