We stayed here for the weekend and got a good rate through Expedia. Walk from the far end of Lille Europe train station - furthest end of the concourse - do not go out of the main exit - and you will be at the hotel in 5 minutes.
Upside is that bedrooms are light, clean and comfy and hotel staff are helpful. The attached casino is not exactly classy - rows of slot machines and a few card tables, but you can safely ignore it if you are in Lille for shopping, eating out and sightseeing.
15 minutes to walk to the old town, which is pleasant to wander around. Breakfast tip - if you are not a big eater and cannot handle the full breakfast buffet, walk into the old town and go to French patisserie, Paul - just off the main square. Other cheap eats would include the various creperies and for a fuller meal, head towards the Avenue of the Purple Pope where there are some cozy restaurants with 3-course set menus. We would also recommend the bus tour which goes on the hour from outside the tourist office and costs Euros 11 per person, lasts 50 minutes to give you a good overview of the city centre. Also, the fine arts museum is second only to the Louvre in terms of range of artworks - take the free audioguide in your language.
Lille is ideal for a weekend visit and has lovely period architecture. It is also way less crowded than Paris, but you can do Lille in two full days, whereas Paris is worth lingering longer.
