I have a sweet tooth and a soft spot for macaroons, so I couldn't resist when I saw the selection in their window. The cakes looked lovely, but I'm pretty sure they came in on a lorry rather than being made on site.
The macaroons, however, were simply gorgeous. Light, crisp on the outside, soft on the inside and with a beautiful creamy filling. They may have lacked the complex flavours of Pierre Hermes' offerings, but I'd put them up against Laduree any day - and the would win on price easily.
There are more chocolatiers than I can keep track of in Lille and many do macaroons, but Meert is definitely worth looking up if you're in town.
