I love walking arm in arm with my femme through the covered portals that ring the square, with tables and chairs filled with the lively buzz of Toulouse. Locals and tourists turn out en masse on sunny evenings to sip coffee or a pastis at the pavement cafes that ring the square,
On the eastern side, you are faced with the 128m long facade of the Capitole (city hall) built in 1750s. inside is the Theatre du Capitole, one of France's most prestigious opera venues ant the over-the-top ,19th century Salledes Illustrtres (hall of Illustrious)
To the south of the square is the wonderful Vieux Qurtier (old quater) full of twisting laneways, some cobbled, leafy squares brimming with tea shops, vegetarian cafes and a lively collegiate atmosphere.

There's nearly always something fun going on in Place du Capitole, whether it be a book market, flea market, organic food market, or some type of performance. We saw all of these going on when we were there. Most enjoyable was a day of competitions between various folk dance performers. Each group also brought their own live musical accompaniment. the different groups represented different regions of France. There also were a number of groups of women on the plaza having fun as part of bachelorette parties.

Massive, pleasing architecture, great for photos.

There is a really nice modern art playground in the back, which my kids enjoyed. We didn't get a chance for them to play in the water fountain, but many kids were, and looked like they were having a blast.

The Salles des Illustres was magnificent, free, uncrowded on a Monday in July, and relatively quick.

Free! Fun! Easy!

We visited Place du Capitole for a recent family wedding. The whole day was extremely well organised and the day go without a hitch [ no pun intended].
