“Uber chic but more care needed”
Reviewed January 16, 2013

Firstly the exterior, the location of the Le Grand Balcon Hotel is fantastic, just 30 yards from the Place Du Capital with a view from one side straight into the main square. The building itself is impressive; a lovely looking listed building with wrought iron Juliet balconies around the windows.

When you enter the lobby, there is certainly a wow factor from the stylishly designed cream and brown bar and lounge; the aviation theme and history is immediately evident from the artwork on the walls. Instead of a reception desk are two check-in pods with laptops. The same member of staff was manning the bar and reception, and this low-staff approach was evident throughout the stay.

We accessed our floor via a nice looking elevator and emerged into a dark corridor lit by neon lights, I am told this was part of the aviation theme but it reminded me of a club, however it certainly made an impact!

On entering the room we were delighted, amazing cloud feature wall behind the bed, cloud like modern lighting, Nespresso machine, long white bench, big shower etc. The room definitely had impact. It was on closer inspection that we weren’t as pleased, there was a light bulb out, the sink wasn’t draining, large crack in the glass shower wall and a stain on some fabrics. This was really disappointing as a decent room inspection would have addressed these.

The final thing to mention is the noise, as many reviews have said if you stay on the street side the noise is noticeable until about 4.30pm, so if you want a peaceful night sleep ask for a courtyard side room. Breakfast was available at 18 Euros but we had ours in the square

Overall there is much to admire about the contemporary style and vibrant atmosphere in this historic hotel. I was glad we stayed here and hope that the management will address these small issues.

Room Tip: Ask for a courtyard side room

This is a very tastefully renovated and decorated hotel (2008), done with respect for its aviation history. Right on a corner of the Place Capitole, offering very comfortable and luxurious rooms. For just a little more money you get more space, and rooms on the inner courtyard are quiet. A warning for those arriving by car. The catastrophic car policy of the city of Toulouse, makes the hotel virtually unreachable for cars. Your GPS system makes you go round in circles, through very narrow streets, and you'll never get to see your hotel. We finally parked in one of the few underground public parkings, and asked the hotel by phone to call us a taxi. Don't let the service "voiturier" fool you! Staff very friendly and accommodating.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room on the inner courtyard.

We arrived at the hotel after a 7 day tour through the lovely French countryside, where we stayed at wonderful
5 star chateaux and inns. This hotel, although it has the 5 stars, is a big disappointment in comparison. It is a very average, modern hotel. On the plus side, it is well located and convenient.
The bed is comfortable. The wifi works well and is free. On the downside the rooms are decorated in an unattractive modern style that seems dated. The hallways are narrow and dark. Many rooms look into a depressing air shaft. The breakfast is ordinary. My room service tea arrived lukewarm, twice. The staff is amateurish and young. The elevator is slow. There is no lobby, no nice places to gather for a drink, no restaurant.

The room (422) was tastefully decorated and the lighting is sophisticated. It's at the back of the hotel. Even with open the windows it's quiet. Good bed quality. The free WiFi worked flawlessly. The 3D television with iPhone dock is great. I appreciated the complementary Nespresso coffee in the room.
The breakfast (18€) was very good. Good variety, delicious bread, fresh orange juice, good coffee, ...
Service was professional and heartly. My late check-in went smooth. Checking-out later and temporary luggage storage was also no problem.
The hotel is perfectly located in the heart of Toulouse, near place Capitol.
The taxi drive from the airport to the hotel on a sunday night (23h) costed 32€.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back a quiet but rooms at the front have a great balcony with a great view.

On our arrival the service was professional and welcoming. The room was perfectly clean, loved the details from the toiletries to the coffee machine. We had requested a quiet room and were allocated a room at the back of the hotel which was perfect. The linen and towels were lovely quality. We can't comment on breakfast as we ate out. On check out, which was early in the morning, we were attended to by a young man , unfortunately I did not get his name who was extremely helpful and very pleasant. We will return and would recommend this hotel without hesitation.

What a unique hotel, like sleeping in a cloud! The aeronautical theme has a historical basis as Aeropostale pioneer pilot St. Exupery was a long time guest. But the guest room decor and calmness take the theme into the clouds. Pure white, puffy bed linens with grey fluffy pillows mirror the cloud motif on the ceiling. Quotes by St, Exupery are stenciled on the walls.

The staff is friendly and gracious, the breakfast/lounge area fun and funky. Fast, free Wifi on the practical side.

Our room had view of sunrise behind the ornate Hotel de Ville on Place du Capitol, which was an unexpected bonus.
