“The receptionist made it even better”
Reviewed September 2, 2013

A well located hotel within walking distance of tourist sites and close to restaurants. The receptionist was wonderfully helpful, knowledgeable and friendly no matter the time of day. Good size clean and modern room and bathroom. Coffee making facility. There was a minibar with complimentary drinks provided. Safe in the room for valuables. Free Wi-Fi. Breakfast cost 16 euros and was reasonable.

The reception staff smile readily, willingly help with questions etc. and are generally very well organized. The hotel is set back from the street and quiet. It has been re-modelled recently. The rooms are not big but well-furnished. The bathroom etc. are high quality. There is an ingeniously designed swimming pool with jacuzzi jets which was a welcome refuge in 34º. There is also a garden to have breakfast in.
The breakfast is OK but expensive for what it is. Hence 4* not 5*.

This hotel is deceptively nice. It is hard to find and really tucked away, but once you get inside it is really nice. The bad part is the part of the city. It seems a bit seedy and "on the wrong side of the tracks". The room itself was really nice, with opening windows and lovely sitting area. Walking around at night to find a restaurant did seem a little "dangerous", with a lot of unsavoury characters, appearing to be learking. But room service is not to be advised! So seeking a restaurant is recommended. The breakfast on offer is certainly not an option to be taken. If you can, look for somewhere else .... not that you will find many options close by and open at that time of the day. Good city if you have transport to get out. This hotel was nice on the inside, but the city itself should be bypassed.

Room Tip: Our room good - but skip the town/city entirely.

I was recently booked into the Hotel Mermoz as part of an expo I was attending in Toulouse. Upon reading some of the reviews - I had some trepidation about the hotel. However, I have to say that all my fears disappeared when I arrived at the hotel. The street is a typical urban street, variety of shops from supermakets to bakers, and other reatil. Certainly nothing scary for me. Whilst the hotel does have a metal gate in the entrance way - it certainly was not ugly or made the hotel feel like a "prison". It should be noted that there are 20 steps up to the reception entrance, however, it you enter into the car garage, there is a door maked "reception" and an elevator that takes you to the first level,. I found the front-desk staff friendly and attentive. On arriving at my room, right next to the elevator - I already had the idea that I would have to ask for a change to aqvoid the elevator noice. On entering my room - I was pleasantly surprised with the size of it, the modern decor and how clean it was. I waited for a few guests to use the elevator, then decided to stay in the room because there was no noise that I could here. I couldn't have asked for more in the room. Large flat-screen TV with heaps of channels including CNN. Be warned that later at night a porn channel is available free of charge - so if you have children - make sure this channel is turned off or don't let them have the remote!!. There was a work desk large enough for my laptop and papers. A swivel lounge chair was an added bonus. A very comfortable bed, with a rather heavy douvet, and plenty of pillows. The minin bar included 3 cans of drink complimentary. The seperate toilet is a bonus for couples/families. The bathroom had complimentary amenities. The towels were all folded and wrapped in ribbon which was a nice touch. The breakfast was adequate, with plenty of cheese choices, scrambled eggs, meats, spreads, cereals, juices, yoghurts, breads, water (both sparkling and plain). There was only 1 persons servicing the breakfast room - Anita - and I have never seen a person work so hard and efficiently!!! She also had a friendly nature like the other hotel staff. The only drink I had from the bar was a coffee - which was terrible (like most French coffee) and was €2.50. A litle steep for bad coffee. The hotel is a few minutes walk from the main rail station, and about 15-20 minutes from Place du Capitole - the main square. At no stage did I feel uneasy on this walk between hotel and the square. There's plenty of interesting retail shops and others along the route. Would I stay at this hotel again?? Yes. I did notice there are several hotels not far from the main square, but never had a chance to check them out or compare prices. Not all htoels have a parking garage - aqnd this is where the Hotel Mermoz is one-up with their underground parking.

Room Tip: Take a room near the elevator - as these are larger "deluxe" rooms - and I did not hear an...

So I'll be spending the next five night here, and have spent a few nights here twice before. We get a great corporate rate plus my colleagues stay here, so not so bad. Pretty basic, and the neighborhood is not all that atractive but only a five minute walk to central Toulouse and never have felt unsafe. Breatkfast is good, and the folks are nice that run the place. I've found Toulouse can be hit or miss with hotets, and at the end of the day, as the title says, it is not a bad place to stay......

This hotel is situated on Rue Matabiau, not far from the bus and railway stations. Rue Matabiau is a dreary street that's fallen on harder times. The entrance to the hotel off the street is most off-putting, appearing to be the entrance to an underground car park. You walk into a cavernous garage sized area with a great iron gate across it, and it's only after a while of uncertain looking that, amongst a battery of bell pushes, you find a small figure of a walking man. Push this bell push and a crackly voiced asks you to identify yourself and your business there. An orange light then starts to flash and a section of the iron gate opens. You walk up a flight of steps to reception.
I mentioned to the receptionist that accessing the hotel was like going into a prison. She didn't take kindly to this, responding that I had not only a special rate for my room, but a very exceptional rate (about £85), implying "don't grumble". The bedroom was cool (in the old, real sense of the word) and clean, but wholly without personality -- a typical mass-produced business hotel room. In the bathroom there was a thin, cheap plastic "glass" and in the loo, very cheap, thin and inadequate loo paper. The bed cover was a winter weight duvet (the weather outside was over 30 degrees -- okay, there was air conditioning, but...).
Breakfast was adequate, but had run out of a number of things.
There are better hotels than this.

We spent 2 nights at Mermoz.
Having visited many countries and hotels in the past 15 years, we are somehow experienced travellers. I am sorry to say that we expected more for its price range:

1. Although we reserved the room on their official site a month ago via credit card, we were asked at the check-in to pay *in advance* the full amount of our stay. I find it bizzare since I've never had before this "no trust" experience. Even their printed booking form said right the opposite ("The payment is made at the hotel AFTER your stay"). Anyway, we agreed because all other nice hotels were sold out. They justified this arrangement by saying that we "got a special room price" (special=185e). Still, not written anywhere. Faux-pas. On the other hand, they offered us a room upgrade at no extra charge.
2. Since it was a very busy weekend (as they said), the maid did not manage to make up the room after our first night. I think that anytime between 10am and 5pm is sufficient for making up rooms, don't you? They called us at 5pm to ask if we need a room service, but we prefered to continue our nap after an exhaustive walking tour.
3. Room AC was inadequate, no difference if you set it to 5 or 20 degrees. Beware of hot days.

Other than that, the room was nicely decorated and spacious, the bathroom was in very good shape and the hotel is in a quiet location. The nearby area is not the best of Toulouse, you can walk down the road and see "working girls" waiting for "customers". But it's safe and in walking distance of the city center.
