What a place to stay in the Dardogne regionnof France,Good food ALSO english speaking with Manu & Sally the perfect host hostess made our stay a VERY enjoyable one & I agree with arthur r & Doug E in everything they says in their reviews plus it doesn`t matter how busy they are yhey always have time to make sure you have a super holiday (as we most certainly had) BUT when visiting Rocamadour allow yourself more than one day.

Room Tip: if possible ask for a bedroom overlooking the valley you will not be disappointed

Excellent hotel , friendly staff, in the heart of Rocamadour but nearby parking not a problem. If this is a two star then I have no need for a three star or more hotel........
The restaurant has a terrific view across the valley and swifts fly under the second floor balconies....just brilliant....

Room Tip: The higher rooms have a better view - the second floor in the main building have a balcony as well...

the hotel is idealy placed .The rooms are old but very comfortable and have verything you need.we went on a coach tour with 24 other people and we all had a lovely time.Ignore the reviews about poor staff .they are brilliant.can't do enough for you.the food we had all week was very good ,only one complaint about some steak but if he had said something it would have been changed without trouble.a lovely host and husband in a wonder full setting

Room Tip: all rooms face the front but some have balconies and there is a lift

When reviewing this hotel you have to consider the location and the age of the building. The rooms are clean and tidy but very basic., The food in the restaurant is ok. The restaurant is open to the public so is always busy, but the service is very good. if you take breakfast reasonably early you will see hot air balloons taking off from the valley bellow the hotel. The hotel is set in a fantastic location and as long as you are not expecting four star hotel luxury you will enjoy your stay.

Room Tip: Better rooms are on higher flloors

What a setting, this was my first visit to Rocamadour and I found the town is stunning, there's a beautiful climb up to the Rock (or lift if you can't manage the walk) and the Black Madonna at the top. The Hotel Lion d’or Hotel is situated just inside the town’s medieval walls – a superb location for exploring all that the town has to offer. Free parking for my car not too far away, the reception area was spacious and the lady serving could not have been more helpful, she speaks perfect English that helped me, as my French is not very good. My triple room (double and single bed) was spacious, immaculately clean, free wifi, flat screen tv (not that I watched it), and balcony with beautiful views. The bathroom was clean and fresh (no bath) but great shower with good water pressure and shower gel and soap for toiletries. I could find nothing negative to say concerning our room. I stayed for 3 nights and for 2 of these nights I ate in the hotels restaurant that is directly opposite. Meals on both nights were superb, food was locally sourced, the waiters were attentive, fast and spoke English, they adapted a dish for my daughter with no questions asked, and the wine served was superb. The views from both my room and the restaurant were fantastic. Fois gras is a speciality of the region, and the owner/chef makes this himself, you have to try it - it's to die for - make sure you ask for the one that he makes. Also ask Sally, the owner, for tips on where to visit - she's hugely helpful and will answer all your questions and even make bookings for you if you want. I'm pleased I discovered this place, and will certainly come back as there is so much more to see and do. We stayed over Easter and one of the hi-lights was on the Saturday night around 2100 hours a procession passed by the hotel for a mid-night mass at the Sanctuary at the top of Rocamadour, this was led by priests and everyone was singing and holding candles, it was very moving and lovely to see.

Room Tip: Front facing room with balcony

I stayed here as a pilgrim on foot to the Shrine of the Black Madonna. This hotel suited my needs admirably, though my room was a bit on the small side. The hotel restaurant on the other side of the main street had a good selection of menus to suit all pockets, and even a hungry pilgrim on a budget came away well satisfied. The restaurant service was quick and efficient, and the hotel staff including the owner, could not have been more helpful in every way when I and my friends had to travel to diverse places by taxi, train and bus. In all I really enjoyed the hotel and all that Rocamadour had to offer.

Room Tip: Get a room on the very top floor, the views across the valley are fabulous.

I don't understand the negative comments on this site - the hotel is beautifully situated in the middle of a medieval town which is the most visited tourist attraction in France. I have always found the proprietors, an English lady and her French chef husband to be friendly and charming, as did a lot of other guests according to Tripadvisor. The Lion d'Or is a medieval building, and as such the corridors vary in size and style - it is not a purpose built hotel where all the rooms are of uniform size, but this is part of it's charm. Agreed there are no tea and coffee making facilities, but this is usual in France, and the breakfast is a perfectly adequate continental breakfast and includes fruit juice, cereals, bread, croissants and jam with tea/coffee - if you want a bit fat fry up then this is not the place. The rest of the food is excellent as the owner is a fully trained chef and prides himself on the quality of the food served - indeed you will see local people eating in the restaurant which is always a good sign. I can only think the different views represent differing expectations, and I think the hotel is lovely and can't wait to stay there again. Nothing is too much trouble for Sally, the owner, who let us know the best places to see so we didn't miss anything, and there are plenty of beautiful restaurants and cafes and shops near the hotel - the village is a great place to wander round. I love this region of France and will certainly stay in this hotel again - I don't understand some people!

Room Tip: Ask for one with a view over the canyon
