“A pleasant experience”
Reviewed April 15, 2014

I stayed here as a pilgrim on foot to the Shrine of the Black Madonna. This hotel suited my needs admirably, though my room was a bit on the small side. The hotel restaurant on the other side of the main street had a good selection of menus to suit all pockets, and even a hungry pilgrim on a budget came away well satisfied. The restaurant service was quick and efficient, and the hotel staff including the owner, could not have been more helpful in every way when I and my friends had to travel to diverse places by taxi, train and bus. In all I really enjoyed the hotel and all that Rocamadour had to offer.

Room Tip: Get a room on the very top floor, the views across the valley are fabulous.

I don't understand the negative comments on this site - the hotel is beautifully situated in the middle of a medieval town which is the most visited tourist attraction in France. I have always found the proprietors, an English lady and her French chef husband to be friendly and charming, as did a lot of other guests according to Tripadvisor. The Lion d'Or is a medieval building, and as such the corridors vary in size and style - it is not a purpose built hotel where all the rooms are of uniform size, but this is part of it's charm. Agreed there are no tea and coffee making facilities, but this is usual in France, and the breakfast is a perfectly adequate continental breakfast and includes fruit juice, cereals, bread, croissants and jam with tea/coffee - if you want a bit fat fry up then this is not the place. The rest of the food is excellent as the owner is a fully trained chef and prides himself on the quality of the food served - indeed you will see local people eating in the restaurant which is always a good sign. I can only think the different views represent differing expectations, and I think the hotel is lovely and can't wait to stay there again. Nothing is too much trouble for Sally, the owner, who let us know the best places to see so we didn't miss anything, and there are plenty of beautiful restaurants and cafes and shops near the hotel - the village is a great place to wander round. I love this region of France and will certainly stay in this hotel again - I don't understand some people!

Room Tip: Ask for one with a view over the canyon

What a shame there is so little attention to detail paid to the bedrooms. The rooms are so dismal, the bedroom feels grubby. The only good thing is the location, it needs a good overhaul. do yourself a big favour and go down the road to the Best western for just a few pounds more, it's well worth the money. Give this place a miss.

I have just returned from a visit to this hotel with a coach tour company which has a reputation for choosing good hotels. Well, this time they failed dismally as this hotel is very poor. There are a couple of positive points. It is well located in the middle of the village and the restaurant is OK. Admittedly we were served a very poor meal the first night. The grilled sirloin steak was virtually inedible and there were a lot of complaints. After that, the evening meal improved as the courses were taken from the set menu, although it was not identical. Breakfast was very basic continental but it was OK. We were allocated rooms in the building across the road from the restaurant. The single room I was allocated was extremely depressing and badly in need of decoration. I had paid £150 extra for this dubious privilege. It was dark and poky, with orange walls, brown paintwork and maroon carpet (room 305). It was tiny, with a small double bed, no bedside table, no drawers, a narrow single wardrobe with a shelf above, a table at the bottom of the bed and a tiny bathroom with hardly any room between the fittings. There was a single orange and brown curtain which did not cover the window. I understand some rooms were better than others, but generally speaking the coach party seemed to have been given inferior rooms. There is no bar in this hotel and service is very offhand. There is little apparent interest in customer service in this hotel. I have not been to France before and do not know about the general quality of hotels but this certainly left a lot to be desired and did not deserve even a 2 star rating.

Room Tip: If you are allocated a room on the 3rd floor of the block opposite the restaurant, do not accept it!

We ate here 5th September with hopeful confidence since it is a Logis de France since our hotel restaurant was closed. What a disappointment! The staff were off hand and entirely focused on the amercan coachparty present and the contrast in their treatment of us and them was marked. The food was poor - my husband's salad seemed to be mainly croutons and lettuce - and the chips with steak were the worst I have ever encountered! Thin, broken and underdone - in fact due to visiting Oradour on the way home we missed lunchtime and had to eat at a roadside cafe and their chips were much better! The dessert was worse than one finds in a supermarket cafeteria. Location was good but the restaurant and the staff service was the worst I have ever encountered.

I stayed at this hotel for three nights last year as a solo female traveler. I felt like I stuck out like a sore thumb, but the owners were friendly and welcoming and made me feel at ease. My room was above the restaurant on the second floor, and looked down on the main village street. It couldn't have been in a better location - just step outside and you're right in the medieval town! The room was spacious and clean, and felt safe which was important for me. I ate at the restaurant once - both the service and food were amazing.

As far as the town is concerned, it truly is one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited. Coming into the old town and seeing it hang off the edge of the mountain was a magical experience for me. The medieval part of town is a single narrow street lined with stone buildings. Long, ancient stairs lead you up to a castle and church that are built right up against the rock and was unlike anything I had ever seen. I probably stayed more days than I needed to, as you could probably see everything in half a day, but I spent several days just wandering along the street and through the castle.

Negatives: The experience is diminished by the number of tourist shops and the train (yes, there is a cheesy miniature train that choo-choos people through town). There are other medieval towns in the south of France where that feeling of "old" is better preserved. Having said that, this place is still well worth a short visit. Just remember that if you roll into town on the SNCF like I did, the town is a 3km walk from the train station, and don't be surprised if there is not a single other person at the station when you arrive!

This is the second time I have stayed at this hotel, each time with a coach party and each time has been a pleasure, the rooms are clean and spacious, I have always found the owners very friendly and helpful. Our room on the second floor had 2 balconies with a fantastic view and new modern bathroom. The food served in the restaurant was excellent, the waiters polite and charming. Good value for money and maybe 1 day I will visit for a 3 rd time.
