“Wonderful surprise”
Reviewed October 11, 2013

We happened to be on a bicycling adventure with a focus of seeing the cro-Magnon caves. While in Rocamadour sightseeing, we happened upon the sign for the cave. A lovely French woman told us that another tour in English would begin in 15 minutes. The tour lasted ~45 minutes and was very thorough. There were many interesting formations and several animals painted on the walls by early man. While there are not as many paintings as the nearby Fonte De Gomme Cave, it was a privilege to be allowed entry into the past at Grotte Préhistoique des Merveilles.

“Caves of history”
Reviewed September 29, 2013

We visited on a week day during shoulder season and like all tourist attractions this is the best time. I could imagine it would be quite a long wait if it was a busy holiday time. This would challenge older and younger people. Nonetheless if you get there early and choose quiet day it is fantastic. Would strongly recommend to take a picnic lunch though as the restaurants were very expensive. Four euro for a small pack of potato chips (crisps) is ridiculous.

“Very interesting, but no good for non-French speakers.”
Reviewed August 19, 2013

The caves are quite lovely but the arrangement for non-French speakers are no good at all. The tours run every 45 minutes or so and the wait was quite hard work with kids. However, the trouble started when underground. The tour is long and slow. The French folks looked like they were struggling a bit, but the English and Germans in the group were basically just stood still at the back of the group hardly able to see anything nor understand what was said by the guide. The guide sheets provided had no context as you couldn't tell where you were from the text provided so we were unable to explain what was going on to the kids.

From a geological point of view I am sure the caves are great. For family entertainment sticking to the town would be a good idea.

“Tighten up your timing!”
Reviewed August 4, 2013

We had hoped a cave visit to Grotte des Merveilles at Rocamadour would be a good preview of things to come later in our holiday in the Les Eyzies valley, and duly paid up for an 11.30am start. Twenty minutes later, the previous tour had still not finished, and we were due back to our hotel by 12.30pm. We were disappointed, therefore, to have to leave the tour early, just as it was getting on the the cave paintings (of some interest if you are in the area, but don't bust a gut to get there). The staff would not entertain the idea of a partial refund.
