The history and beauty of this site is awe inspiring. Yes there are a lot of tourists, but the spirituality of the chapels and cathedral will overcome the masses. A must see in the Dordogne.

We found little to detain us here. The town is presented more as a modern commercial opportunity rather than an old settlement. We saw no real pilgrims perhaps because it was late in the day, 6pm.
we were unmoved by the church and Madonna.I think as we are not religious we could get little sense of a religous atmosphere without observing some sincere worship such as we saw at Lourdes.
It was cold and raining, certainly this did not help but we would not have minded missing this visit.

As anyone who has seen photographs of the town know, Rocamadour clings to the cliffs and is in a spectacular position. It is one of the 'must visit' sights of France; even if, like me, you aren't religious.

The best way to approach the town is along the D36 road which takes you into L'Hospitalet which overlooks Rocamadour and from where you get a stunning view of the town (Take a camera!). At the end of the D36 (T junction) the viewpoint is 100m to your left and there is a small car park there too. If you can't park there, there is a lot of other parking in the other direction.

From the viewpoint follow the signs to the parking above the town with more views on the way.
There is a funicular railway in the car park for the infirm or those who don't fancy walking down (or up!!).

Be aware that:
If you want to visit the ramparts, you will nedd a 2€ piece for each person at the turnstile.
Toilets in the town require a 50 centime piece in the door; the mens too.

The location and views are superb. Expect lots of tourist shops in the village; it is the second most visited place in France (the big metal tower thing is first!).

Definately worth a visit!

We went specifically because our friend wanted to see the Black Virgin of Rocamadour. The town is interesting and pretty at the same time. I had been there about 30 years ago and remembered the ramparts which proved to be just as exhilarating now as they were then.

Although the town itself is stunning, the place is overcrowded and the dozens of tourist shops spoil it all.
