Don't listen to,people who said the place is overcrowded with tourists. Isn't that what travelling is all about. There will always be tourists wherever you go. We love this place, the village is just beautiful and you can walk leisurely and explore the whole are and marvel at the beauty of it all. Please fellow travellers go and see it.

this is a lesser known site of pilgrimage, beautifully restored and maintained, spotless and multilingual. No tatty shops , all tasteful and serene.

we visited the basilique st.sauveur and all the other places within the same vicinity and found the whole experience well worth the climb to get to the very top. the village and the chapel seem to be built into the cliff face and how they did tht with their limited tools and technology is quite amazing. the views are stunning indeed and if you are tired after all that climbing and sightseeing there are plenty of places to rest and catch your breath.

I had heard from a few people that Rocamadour was crowded and tacky but I spent 2 nights there in early September 2012 and that wasn't my experience at all. The settlement is stunning, built into the side of gorge. At the top level is a castle and for 2 euros you can walk out on the battlements with breathtaking views of the village and gorge. At the next level down is the impressive basilica, a place of pilgrimage as it contains a wooden black madonna. I have been to other places of pilgrimage in Europe which were considerably busier and far more dominated by opportunities to purchase often rather tacky religious items. Below the basilica is the village which is essentially one street. It has many restaurants, galleries and artisan food and gift shops. There were a few "ordinary" gift shops but much of what they were selling seemed to be of good quality. The three levels are linked by steps but there is also a discreet lift system. All in all a very impressive and enjoyable place.

leave all the tourist shops alone and walk up to the churches, try and go when not quite so busy as the chapels are 'spiritual' even if you are not religious! Also drive in from the bottom and park in the car park below not on top to experience the village clinging to the side of the cliffs. Magical place!
