This museum is in an imposing, rather dreary building. Full of objects one would not feel compelled to see. Very few paintings by Ingres, but a lot of his collections of art, etc. while we were there, there was a special exhibit by a contemporary painter whose name I have not bothered to recall, who "embellished" well-known Ingres paintings. Even worse, these quite tasteless creations were embedded in the actual permanent exhibit, quite spoiling what there was to see. Other ancient and medieval bric-a-brac in the lower floors. Altogether, Montauban is a rather depressing location.

Well worth a visit to see the former palace building and the Ingres paintings..wow..the rest of its collection was great too.The museum side was well worth a look too, taking you on a journey through time and using rooms that perhaps you would'nt normally see.

What was shocking was to see how poor the drawings of Ingres are! I did not expect this from a supposed master of drawing. The permanent collection is not worth the detour. However I have been to some exciting temporary exhibitions there.

If you like Ingres, this is the place to be. But the gem for me is the collection of Bourdelle portrait busts. A delightful show of modern homages to Ingres was hilarious. A lovely building, pleasant helpful staff, fine collection throughout.
