I am rating this hotel in the context of Lourdes as a pilgrimmage and it's fairly unique existence. It is difficult to rate it in the same way as holiday hotel. In context the hotel is good but you wouldn't pick it for your summer holiday destination.
The hotel is basic, but friendly, lovely views over the river and the Pic du Jer (if room at front of hotel) with a small balcony.
Small room, clean, hot water in shower, basically and sparsely furnished. A tight squeeze for three people.
Food plentiful, basic. Lovely little bar area for coffee and pre-dinner drinks.
Close to the domain and local sights.
Sound of the river the most prominent noise at night but bring ear plugs as a precaution in busier times.
Great or large groups and very accomodating owner

The hotel food is excellent, we went full board with a party of 35 people and were treated very well. The whole hotel is clean and the staff are friendly. The facilities in the room are very acceptable for a 3 star hotel in France. The hotel is well situated for access to the Domain whilst at the same time been very quiet at night. I would recommend this hotel

Room Tip: Excellent veiws from the front rooms of the hotel

On the nights of the 1st and 2nd of May, I visited Lourdes. My parents stayed at the excellent Hotel Padoue, and they reserved a room for me in the nearby Hotel St. Suzanne. Both of these hotels displayed a three star rating on the exterior of their respective buildings. On arrival quite late to my hotel room in the Hotel St. Suzanne, I was dismayed by the tired décor and the impossible shower arrangement. It was necessary to climb over the bidet to access the shower, and as the tiles were unclean, I ultimately decided that I was better not to shower at all than to use the facilities in the room.

My primary concern however, was the condition of the linen. When I turned back the cover, I was distressed to find a filthy green quilt that was badly stained and obviously had not been cleaned for a long time. When I then removed this, the blanket beneath was ancient, and also dirty. To make things worse, when I get in between the sheets I was horrified to see hair from another person on my pillowcase. The carpet was ingrained with dirt. Having undressed for bed, I put my socks back on as it felt filthy beneath my feet.

At 8 am the next morning, when I had finally gotten to sleep, I was awoken to see a male cleaner in my room. He apologised and left, and when I put my head out the door to ask what had happened, his female supervisor simply stated – “he was doing the room”. No further apology was given. When descending for breakfast, the supervisor asked could she go in to my room to clean, and I asked her to leave it for the moment. When I returned, I saw that she had ignored my request, entered the room and given the sheets a cursory straightening.

When I descended in the morning to advise the receptionist that I would not stay another night for the reasons outlined above, I was met with disbelief and poor manners. I was told that there could not be the hair from somebody else in my bed, to which I simply responded “but I saw it”. I was told that my claims could not be possible as the hotel receives a lot of repeat business from tours. I informed the receptionist that I thought this was extraordinary, considering my experience. Ultimately the receptionist asked me what I wanted, and as my father had paid in advance for two nights I asked if I could be reimbursed for the second night which I would not be spending in the hotel. I was told that this was not possible, that the two nights had been paid for and they would refund none of the amount paid, including the money which was paid in advance for breakfast. Please bear in mind that at this time it was only 10am, and the official checkout time was not until noon.

I then moved to the Hotel Florida, which is also rated as three stars. This hotel was truly worthy of its star rating, with clean, modern rooms, spacious and impeccably clean bathrooms.

Given this massive discrepancy with the quality of accommodation in hotels which share the same star rating, it is difficult to have any confidence in the accreditation that the Ministry of Tourism has awarded the hotel. In fact, my experience with the Hotel St. Suzanne was so appalling; I fundamentally would not trust any star rating for a hotel in France.

My main point of concern was the poor standard of hygiene and the unclean bed linen. To compound my woes, the curtains did not close and there was a street lamp just outside which was alight all night. The noise from the elevators was constant. I can honestly say that this was the single worst night’s sleep I have ever had in a hotel or hostel.
