“An unexpected treasure”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 25, 2013

Given that the museum is located in a "provincial" city, even the one where the artist was born, we were astounded by how comprehensive the collection of work by Toulouse-Lautrec is. Especially interesting were the examples showing how a poster came to be, from the first rough sketch to the finished product. There are many paintings from his earliest years, as a teenager, and you could sense the genius even then. Make sure to allow enough time.

If you love Toulouse Lautrec's images this collection is for you. All phases of his short career and life were described and pictured.

“who knew? so much Lautrec”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 12, 2013

Albi itself is well worth the journey, Lautrec Museum was huge and almost overwhelming in the size and scope of the musuem. Don't miss it, but pace yourself as it is a very large collection, and can be an overdose.

Staff very helpful, buy the City pass for great value.

“excellent art museum in a nicely renovated palais”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 9, 2013

In order to appreciate the paintings in quiet, we came to this museum on a Sunday(September 8th) morning at 9 o'clock, opening time.

The personnel were not yet ready, neither on position for working because they were still outside chatting among themselves with cigarettes in hands. Our early arrival seemed to disturbe their conversation and it annoyed them profoundly. Finally, we were "permitted" to see the Toulouse-Lautrec's paintings. 8€ for the entry fee and we took the audioguide, 4 € extra.

Entering to the first gallery, annoyingly, two young workers/guards were still lying on the sofa, continuing in discussing their recent romantic conquests so loudly that we could hardly listen to our audioguide. We thought that with our arrival, they shall know to stop it and return back their position. No, not at all, they were still "couching" on the sofa like slugs and talking noisily about the details of their sexual adventures. All along our visit in first gallery, about 20 minutes, they didn't change a bit, we finally protested and they looked at us so innocently as if they hadn't done anything wrong. And they even didn't want to stop. It was not until that we threatened to call the management, the two young employees finally left reluctantly.

Finally, we were able to appreciate the drawings in calm. But again, in another gallery, two other guards started to chat between themselves, which made it impossible to listen to audioguide. Luckily it didn't last that long as previous one.

Of course, not all gallery guards were this way. Most of them did their job as they should without disturbing any visitors.

This museum is actually wonderful and nicely done: they successfully transformed the ancient palais d'évêque/de la Berbie into musée Toulouse-Lautrec. The renovation is amazing and all the master works of Toulouse-Lautrec are well presented. In every gallery there are explanation notes in different languages to read.

The garden was another joyful place to walk around, with nice view of pont-vieux.

This is indeed an excellent art museum with wonderful collection of paintings, especially mainly those of Toulouse-Lautrec . Only if one wants to enjoy in calm, it seems not that easy because even the gallery guards could be noisy.
