This is a colossal structure, built out of red brick, and initially difficult to guess when it was built. It is a very imposing and grand cathedral- well worth a visit.

It's a very unusual building, more like a fort than a cathedral in some respects. Interiors are very unusual and unlike anything else we saw in France. Worth the visit.

Colorful, sweeping, totally in perfect condition and every inch covered in Renaissance painting completed by Venetian artists. Quite a change from more sedate and colorless cathedrals that are more commonly encountered. I arrived when the bells were pealing the start of a wedding, so it is alive and well used as a church and not just a tourist site. An inspirational location for quilters searching new designs! The downside is that the cathedral is partially shrouded for construction and the much-touted choir for which there is ticketing required is totally disappointing as it is under renovation as well. Skip the choir until renovation is complete.

If you think the exterior is impressive, wait til you see inside. Every column, wall and all the ceilings are decorated in a most unusual style. The depictions of hell on either side of the alter are terrifying, enough to keep you on the straight and narrow. There are free organ recitals twice a week, which would be worth seeking out, sadly we were not there on the appropriate days.

An enormous red brick building, which nevertheless is totally in keeping, started in the 12th century.
