This cathedral is not only huge, but fabulous! It's built like a fortress, impressive, not ornate, but certainly austere, with a lacy gothic portal that contrasts beautifully with its stark exterior. How anyone could call it dull is beyond me -- exciting is more apt! The elaborately frescoed and brilliantly colored interior with its rood screen and stained glass windows all combine to make a staggering interior that contrasts with the stark exterior. One can easily spend an hour inside. The view from the cathedral toward the river is wonderful too. The town itself is charming, with half-timbered houses and winding streets brimming with life. The ducal palace adjacent to the cathedral houses a museum dedicated almost entirely to Toulouse-Lautrec, who was born in Albi. It contains 1,000 of his works. It's so amazing to see so much of his work at one time -- really gives one a new appreciation of the scope of it. Another great thing about Albi is that it's not very touristy.

Wonderful site in Albi. Just the size of this cathedral is astonishing and hard to believe.
Beggars outside were a distraction. Very sad.
The weather was perfect. There is parking below the site.

You need to stand in front of it to realise its enormity.
This cathedral-fortress, was once a display of might of the local bishops.
Intentionally built to also protect them at times of religious conflicts in the 11th century, this massive building is dull and completely disproportionate to the rest of Albi.
Yes you will be impressed by its size.
But not by its beauty, or architectural ingenuity.
I really felt as if I was looking at a massive boulder that had landed on the city square!
It is still worth visiting, if only to learn to appreciate other, more ornate and delicate churches!

What a magnificent cathedral, it's enormous and beautiful. Well worth the visit. I agree with everyone this is a real gem. Albi is a beautiful city and needs some time to wander the area.
