“Good hotel in great location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 20, 2011

I had a comfort room on a w/e 3 for 2 deal. Room 303 was front facing looking out towards the station. Double glazed windows with aircon eradicated any noise nuisance. Breakfast standard French fayre - nothing hot but very acceptable.

I stayed here on two separate occasions when travelling to Italy, both for just one night. On the first stay, the room was small but acceptable (on the second floor), ideal if you were staying for just a couple of nights. The view looked out onto the back courtyards of the other buildings which wasn't great but it's not really an issue. The room was fairly clean and the beds were comfortable, I would have rated it 6/10.

However, on the second stay a week later, the room was awful (fourth floor). This room was right behind the 'hotel' sign and overlooked the station, which was a much better view but there was a lot more noise than before. It was as I was admiring the view that I noticed the multiple cobwebs and dead flies. There was at least 6 clusters of cobwebs and dust, each must have contained hundreds of dead flies and insect, I was absolutely appalled. They were high up on the corner of the wall and ceiling, but it was still disgusting and was not expected. If my friend hadn't already unpacked and jumped in the shower I would have asked to move rooms.

The rest of the room remained fairly clean as before, except for those cobwebs and the main ceiling light didn't work, and upon closer inspection I realised that the glass shade was also full of insects. The bathroom was clean but it appeared to be smaller than before, you couldn't sit on the toilet facing forwards and had to sit at an awkward angle. I would have rated this room a 1/10.

Overall, I would not book to stay there again based on the second room. The breakfast was average, if I wasn't on such a strict schedule I would have preferred to eat elsewhere though. The staff were welcoming and spoke good English, and I would say that the two star rating was clearly reflected.

Room Tip: The back rooms have a poor view, the front rooms have a much nicer view but there is more noise.

We normally stay in B&Bs but couldn’t find one in Metz, so picked this hotel for its location and reasonable reviews on Trip Advisor. It’s half way between the old centre of Metz and the new Pompidou Museum, which is definitely worth visiting. For the price, it’s pretty good. Our ‘confort’ room was a reasonable size, bright and modern with a good bathroom and air-conditioning - the only problem was it smelt of cigarette smoke, which was hard to get rid of, even with the windows open for the best part of 3 days (hotel was full so we couldn‘t change rooms).

We took the advice of a previous reviewer and had breakfast at the patisserie just around the corner - much cheaper than the hotel offering, although that looked OK. We also took advantage of the discount parking at the underground parking station underneath the square - hotel staff will give directions and the voucher you need to get the discount - the elevator comes out 30 metres from the hotel‘s front door.

There are heaps of eating places around the station, but we recommend walking a bit to find some nicer ones. We particularly liked Le Bistrot des Sommeliers in rue Pasteur and L’Epicurien at 33 Rue Vigne St Avold, really worth the 10 minute walk.

Room Tip: Ask for a non-smoking room when you book

This Hotel is ok.
It faces the rail station, which is a nice view but a little bit noisy (lot of traffic). We wanted to visit the very center of Metz and it is 20 minutes far by walk. It is great if you come by train but maybe not the best location if you come by car... next time we will find a more central place.

They have decorated the coridors with a lots of plants, some birds and a fountain... this make a fun tropical / jungle atmosphere.

Pleasant staff.

We only had 1 shampoo sample and 1 soap sample for two persons which is not very generous. They forgot the serviettes, so we had to ask for this, but they kindly excused themselves.

We didn't took the breakfast because we've found it expensive for what you get. So went to a tearoom (just 10 meters away) and took café /croissants/ orange juice for half the price.

To sum up I would say that this hotel is a good choice if you look for a cheap accommodation close to the rail-station. But if you want a charming-romantic place in the very center of Metz, there are probably better options.

Located opposite the main station for Metz, there is a car park immediately underneath the station, and as we had a car with us, this was perfect and the hotel give you a Euros 3 , discount pass, which is very good!
The hotel is convenient for walking to the main interests of the town, approx 10 mins to Pompadou (I know completely wrong! and the Sports Arena, not sure what it's called by the Moselle Tennis Tournament was on when we went.
Rooms very spacious, clean and nice plasma TV for catching up with news events.
There is a breakfast available for Euros 8.50 , but the breakfast area looks quite dark and dingy and it was a lovely day so wanted to sit outside for brekkie, so we went to a lovely patisserie/cafe 2 mins walk away, turn right as you exit hotel, follow the pavement round to the right, go past a large bar/restaurant on the corner, and as you turn there are a couple of pavement tables outside , and opposite the post office a lovely patisserie which serves bread & jam, juice, & coffee for Euros 2.50 , and was delicious!

I stayed at the Hotel Metropole for two nights with a friend. As the very reasonable cost of a twin-bedded room (with queen-sized beds) was exactly the same as that of a single room, I invited a friend from Paris to join me. The view of the splendid neo-Romanesque main railway station from our room was superb. Even though we were at the front of the hotel overlooking a busy square (lit by street lamps designed by Philippe Starck if you please!), we were not disturbed at night due to the excellent sound-proofing of the room. We thought that the room and its facilities were a bit above standard for a two star hotel. You can access the Internet from a terminal on the ground floor free of charge. Unlike a previous reviewer, I did not find it at all slow. Breakfast was not included but could be had for an additional 7.5 Euros (if I remember correctly). We had it once and enjoyed it very much, there being a good range of offerings, freshly prepared. It takes around ten minutes on foot to get to the striking Centre Pompidou - Metz, which is the new star attraction in town (it is a branch of the well-known Centre Pompidou in Paris); it opened its doors only in May of this year and will stage two large-scale exhibitions a year, as it has no permanent collection of its own. It takes around a quarter of an hour to walk to the historic centre of Metz. I would recommend visits to the 13th century Cathedral (which claims to have the most important collection of stained glass in the world; it also has one of the highest naves in Europe); and the nearby Musees de la Cour d'Or, which are very imaginatively designed and contain a wealth of art works from Roman to contemporary; the museums occupy a former abbey and adjoining granary, which were built on top of the ruins of some Roman baths. All in all, the Metropole turned out to be an excellent base for sightseeing in Metz and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it on the grounds of location and value for money. I should also mention how helpful and pleasant the staff on reception were. Non-French speaker need not fret, as they speak reasonably good English.

I chose this hotel for my one night stay in Metz partly because the rate was reasonable and it is just opposite the station. The reception staff were very friendly and, because they had run out of city maps, they printed one from the internet for me. The room was comfortable with a separate toilet. Breakfast was a very good buffet. The place was very cosy in the best kind of old fashioned way.
