First of all make sure you call at least a day in advance to make a reservation! We were lucky that someone who had made a reservation did not show. Both of the shifts were completely booked.
The service was excellent. The staff was friendly and had everything under control. They even took the time to help us pick a restaurant for Sunday (because the majority of restaurants are closed on Sundays).
The atmosphere is very cosy. The tables are quite close together but I did not mind at all. The walls are fashioned into wine racks which was a nice touch. If you're lucky and one of the fist to enter, you can get a table outside.
We had the linguine and risotto and both were well prepared. If you can't stand spicy food I recommend not using the pepper that they put on top of the linguine.
Overall I really liked the service and the food. The only criticism is that during the shift change it was a bit hectic to so it took a while for us to get our coffee.

We managed to squeeze into Santa Maria on a busy, sunny Saturday evening in Metz. Set in a quiet street with tables outside, it's a friendly, bustling place.

The menu looked good - enough for a good choice, but not ridiculously long. We were tempted by the Mista antipasti with Parma ham, pancetta, salami, artichokes, peppers, aubergine, three cheeses and mozzarella rissoles, which we shared between us, and was certainly enough for two. It was so good nothing was left.

Mains of Risotto al Scampi - creamy with plenty of prawns, and Linguine Puttanesca - intensely flavoured just like it should be - were both excellent, and more than sufficient. We didn’t have room for deserts. Accompanied with a good house Montepulciano.

€46 for the food was excellent value. Really enjoyable food and environs. Definitely recommended.

We found ourselves in Metz looking for lunch yesterday and checked trip advisor for recommendations.
Of the options mentioned as good choices, we happened upon Santa Maria in the street we were walking in and decided to give it a try.
There was just one non-reserved table available by the door (it was a bit chilly when customers came and went but it is such a small restaurant the door opened infrequently) but we aren't the type to let that deter us.
We chose the house special of the day, turkey breast piccata with desert for 10,50E.
It was fresh, well-cooked and presented. Service was excellent.
The piccata had excellent flavor, the potatoes well seasoned, and the cheese cake option for dessert was good. Couldn't have asked for a better choice, especially for the price!

We visited the place on a Thursday evening. The small place was nearly packed as where a couple of other places In that particular street making for a nice athmosphere.
Two guys were handling the service. Pleasant guys who speak English for you none French speaking visitors.

The Scicilian red wine was pleasant. The food looked and tasted great. We had a Lasagna Bolognese, spagethi ancoise-something Tiramisu, Ile Flottante, 4 glasses of wine and coffees and paid 60€. Reasonable price-quality .

I recommend this place in the center if the old town!

The food was very fresh, the prices are fair and the waiters were very kind and it was not awkward at all that we spoke no French.
