“Charming and unexpected”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 22, 2013 via mobile

We were travelling eastwards towards the wine and food trail and booked a one night stopover in Metz at this lovely hotel.
We wished we had stayed longer such was the charm and beauty of this town.We had a magnificent 1st floor room facing the cathedral which was spacious and beautifully appointed.
We woke the following morning to see the cathedral bathed in a suspended mist which was so lovely.
Sunlight soon broke through as we went downstairs in to the breakfast room.We were greeted with a sensational assortment of quality breakfast offerings. We had to take photos - it was such a visual feast!!!!
This town has a lot to offer and is certainly worth visiting for a few days

Love this place! Locely, classy decorating that feels like you are in an historic place. The rooms are just gorgeous. In addition the staff are super friendly and helpful.. All of them, and I interacted with at least three at various points. On checkin they show you around town on the map, giving interesting tips. And Metz is a lovely town to visit. Very glad we stayed there, even though our plan was to avoid expensive Luxembourg.

This is a charming B&B, with what I call, a "shabby chic" décor. It is a typical, European style B&B with an amazing location - steps from the ancient Cathedral in the center of Metz. The views at night are breath-taking. The breakfast is sumptuous with many types of breads, cheeses, meats, sweet things offered. The coffee was some of the best in France - each person gets a fresh, small pot made from an ancient espresso machine. The breakfast places turns into a couscous joint in the evening. Our room was on the fourth floor, so it was quiet, but there are no elevators. There are issues with noise in the months where you keep your windows open. However, we obtained a room in the Annex that faced the courtyard and it was quiet, even during a festival on the weekend. If you are elderly, it will be hard to manage the ancient wooden stairs. The staff was extremely helpful and had some English. The first woman that checked us in could have come out of an ad for gracefully aging French women! However, she spoke 99% French and was sweet and charming. The rooms were also charming and the beds were comfortable. The amenities included a hair dryer, towel warmer and free wifi. The rooms are small, but we did not spend much time indoors. Metz is a great little city and the nearby restaurants are all great and very French. This is not a touristy town, which lends a lot of French style. If you are looking for an American hotel and area that mimics a Sheraton, you will be out of luck. Go with Rick Steves' idea of being a "temporary local". This hotel fits that bill. Parking is right across the street in a public deck. It was not hard to handle, but larger cars may have trouble in the small spaces.

Room Tip: For quiet nights, I suggest a room facing the courtyard, but you lose the great cathedral view. Wee...

Thanks to TripAdvisor we gave this place a try and were not disappointed. The staff were friendly, the room was nicely appointed and quiet [in the Annex]. It is very central being just opposite the fabulous cathedral. The old quarter with its many interesting shops and restaurants is just a hop skip and a jump away.

All was good value except for the breakfast at 11 euros each which we decided not to have; instead we went round the corner to La Bonne Marraine (top of the cobbled street that you drive up when approaching the Cathedral) where the excellent breakfast with excellent coffee was just 4.50 euros each. Enough said.

Parking is in the public underground car park opposite the cathedral. It's a bit tight but there were bigger cars than mine in there. Most importantly I felt it was safe. We would definitely stay here again.

The hotel is very charming - the rooms are pretty. However, if you have heavy luggage, it may prove difficult to carry the luggage up the very steep stairs. Additionally, if you have a car and don't park it first and then walk to the hotel with your baggage, it can take quite a while to backtrack to the parking. Would I stay again - probably, but not on the 4th floor this time... Additionally the area can be quite noisy on Fri/Sat night.

The location of the hotel is excellent - right by the cathedral.
We stayed for one night on the way back from a week's holiday in Alsace. We wished we'd stayed for 2 nights as Metz is very underrated!

The hotel is in an old building close to restaurants and cafes. The hotel has tried to keep some of the old charm but has some modern touches - the bathroom and shower were very nice for example and the beds and bedding comfortable.

The staff are very friendly and polite which always makes you feel welcome. We had leave early in the morning but were offered complimentary coffee which was a nice touch.

Some people have complained the hotel is old, dusty and grubby and has no elevator / is in need of modernisation. It is old, yes but we found it very clean and to say it needs modernising totally misses the point and decor of the hotel. There is a difference between old style and dirty and grubby. If you want a modern hotel, go and stay in a Holiday Inn!

As for the elevator, we were on the first floor and didn't have an issue. However, installing an elevator in the building would be near on impossible so my advice would be to deal with it and accept the hotel for it is.

We plan to go back to Alsace next year and we'll definitely stop at Metz but this time, will stay for two nights in this hotel.

Terrific city center location across from the (magnificent) cathedral and fresh market. Very friendly and helpful staff. Excellent value. Convenient parking. Rooms charming but dated, and few modern touches (e.g. no elevator, limited storage, limited power points, no A/C). We opened the windows to cool off and it was rather noisy (typical city center noise).
Overall, we enjoyed it due to the location, price and friendly staff.

Room Tip: The view of the cathedral is spectacular; however it's on the street side and hence noisy. Choos...
