I can't exactly explain why I liked this site as much as I did. Since Metz was an enormous fortress-city, it was like that last piece of the puzzle for my imagination to envision the city during Mideval times.
If you visit the Porte des Allemands, make sure you walk north and go on top of the ramparts. From here you can follow a path that traces the outer wall and see some of the destruction from some of the many wars in Metz. It's also extremely quite and peaceful on the trail.
