My husband and I booked Les Lavendes, two of my daughters, with husbands and children booked the other two gites. Penny and Paul could not be more helpful and informative. Not only did we have an excellent tour of the winery but Penny came up with the perfect place to visit on our way back to Beziers airport. They both looked after us all extremely well.

The gites way spacious, well equiped and the wine delicious. The shops not too far away and some really good restaurants within eay reach. So many places to visit, so much to see, we should have taken an extra week.....

We went back to haute Fontaine, having stayed in the large gite (maison java) before. This time we just had a night in the chamber d'hotes, which was comfortable and clean. We chose the rooms with a floral an an indian theme, but the Moroccan and African rooms were also lovely.

Breakfast was delicious and plentiful and of course the wine is as good as ever.

I would recommend haute Fontaine for anyone looking for an authentic and relaxing stay.

My partner and I recently spent a week in Les Lavandes. Haute Fontaine has the potential to be a lovely place, but unfortunately a lack of cleanliness of the accommodation lets it down. It is well situated just off the main road, with the shops and the beach not far away, yet it is far enough away to feel secluded. We have stayed in lots of self-catering accommodation in Britain and France and this is the first place that we have come across which was dirty. A couple of other reviewers have complained about dust, but it wasn't just dusty. When we arrived there was a large clump of hair in the drain of the shower. The tiles in the kitchen and the side of the coffee filter were very greasy and did not appear to have been cleaned in a long time. The shower curtain has a lot of black mould on it and the bathrooom mirror was very smeary. In the bedroom the bedside lamps have cream lampshades, but they are covered in thick dust. The curtain rail is almost falling off of the wall. Someone has wiped a bogie on to the wall and it has not been wiped off. Stacked on the sideboard in the lounge are a large pile of very old, dusty, magazines. The crockery and cutlery is a bit disorganised, with the feeling that the place has evolved rather than anyone has thought about what two people staying somewhere for a week would need.

Paul and Penny are a very friendly and pleasant couple, but I just don't think that cleaning comes high on their agenda. Many of the areas off of the courtyard area are untidy and cluttered and used as a toilet by their many cats. In the area where they sell their wine there was a rack containing old wine bottles which we were informed probably tasted like vinegar by now, and were covered in dust, and yet they had not cleared them in the five years they have been there. The desk was covered in clutter and didn't present a very professional image.

It seems to me as though between guests they just change the bed linen and the towels and don't do much else. Other people have commented that it isn't luxury accommodation and that is not what I expected, but I did expect somewhere clean. It was a very disappointing week and it was a relief to arrive at our next accommodation and have a shower in a clean bathroom. It was the first time that I had felt clean in a week.

My husband and I rented one of the gites (Les Lavandes) for a week in May. The gite was very spacious, clean, and well-outfitted. Penny stopped by with all the necessities: milk, wine, juice, and bread, and was very helpful in orienting us to our apartment and the area. Supermarkets and specialty shops (butcher, boulangerie, farm market, etc.) are very close by and convenient for those, who like myself are inclined to DIY, especially with the abundance of wonderful ingredients from the markets (the covered market in Narbonne is fabulous!).

Penny & Paul Dudson were very warm, welcoming, and helpful. One of the highlights of our week in the Narbonne area was Penny's tour of the vineyard and cave and the wine tasting. Domaine Haute Fontaine produces wonderful AOC and vin du pays wines -- I only wish we could get them in the US.

These aren't luxury accommodations and if that's the type of place you want to stay, I think you should look elsewhere. But if you enjoy having space to spread out; friendly and helpful but unobtrusive hosts; and staying somewhere with great charm and a lot of history, then this could be just right for you. It was for us, and I hope that we'll have the opportunity to stay there again; we had a wonderful week that was over all too soon.

With many thanks and warmest regards to Penny & Paul for a wonderful stay,

Kim Wiley & Jim Ransom

I had the pleasure of staying a few nights at this wonderful winery. Everything was simple top-notch. We stayed at a guest house, there are also nice room in the main building. All are uniquely decorated and you'll feel very much at home. And there are kitchens and a grocery just 10 minutes drive so a family can eat economically.

While they area has attractions of every sort, you could also have a great holiday just exploring the extensive grounds, which include rugged hills with hiking trails, vineyards, old buildings and even a small chapel. The hosts, Penny and Paul, could not have been more welcoming and went out of their way to show us the grounds, the wine making operation, and to share their lovey home with us. On top of that, the food and wine are excellent.

This secluded little gem is a great find for anyone wishing to see southern France. And not speaking French, it was nice to have a UK couple as hosts.

I spent 3 nights at Chateau Haute Fontaine in May, and can't wait to book another visit! Firstly the environment is simply stunning - a beautiful historic chateau set in hundreds of acres of its own vineyards and 'garrigue', the wonderful rocky Mediterranean countryside full of aromatic bushes, old stone walls and pathways that seemingly go on forever. It really is a wonderful environment, and one which Penny and Paul Dudson, the owners of the chateau, are only happy to share with you. 'We love having people stay', said Penny when we arrived, and it really shows as well. Their warm friendly, do-anything-to-help attitude combined with great accommodation, superb food and of course the heavenly location made this one of the best stays away I've had in years of extensive travelling. A truly memorable stay, for all the right reasons.

The Dudsons were in mid-harvest when we arrived in mid-September to stay 10 days in their 2-bedroom gite. It was an extra holiday for us -- I had managed to break 2 ribs on our main holiday so we relaxed in the small private garden outside the front door, in the shade of an enormous fig tree. It let us out of doing anything harder than wandering around the grounds and learning what a very professional operation their vineyard and wine-making was. It was their excellent wine that first drew us, and then we found out that they also had 3 gites and some rooms.

We didn't expect to stumble upon such well-equipped, comfortable lodgings and hosts who were always anxious for our welfare however busy they were. Whether it was a grape-picking machine that didn't work, another guest whose car would not start or one of the lorries that fell into a ditch -- help was always available and generously given.

We explored the neighborhood by rented car, loved the salt marshes and the flamingoes, the villages and the restaurants (3 top-class in neighbouring Bages alone) and the various historical sites. Our son, a historian, joined us from Paris for the last few days -- and pointed out how easy our journey should have been: Eurostar to Paris, change stations and then an express to Narbonne! Here are a few photos to set the scene....

We just have one plea to the Dudsons: if you can lay on such marvellous sunbathing weather in late September, could you perhaps find some comfier sun-loungers too?

P.S. Just seen the review from the dust-shy guest: there were plenty of cleaning materials and these are self-catering gites, not posh hotels. We had a wonderful time and hope to go again!

Room Tip: We hope to stay in the self-contained chalet up the hill with its own pool next time!
