“Very Good Value”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 20, 2012

We were perfectly happy with this budget hotel in a great location to explore the beautiful City of Narbonne.

There is free parking in the street directly outside the Hotel and the room was very clean and comfortable.

Ideal for overnight stays.

This hotel is not close to the train station and if you happen to arrive in the rain taxis are few.
The hotel is clean, front desk staff not very friendly, Like most hotel in Europe the rooms are up a flight of stairs.

Having stayed in 3 star hotels that were more like hostels, I wasn't expecting much and was delightfully surprised. Centrally located across the bridge from the old town of Narbonne (where you'll find a Roman road, medieval streets, a palace and up the road, an excellent preserved undergound Roman market or "Horreum") it's an easy walk to some great restaurants whilst being away from the noise.
The decor in the hotel was fresh and our room quite spacious as French hotel rooms go, quite simply furnished, with air conditioning and a comfortable bed and adjoining ensuite. And rooms under 100 Euro a night to boot!

My family and i stayed here twice (as a stopping off point for the south of france) and were really imipressed by the hotel. Clean, large rooms, free internet, great location in town, friendly staff and a great price.

We stayed at the Hotel de France in mid July and found it to be exactly as described by other reviewers here:centrally located, good a/c and free wi fi that worked consistently for Emily's ipad, easy free parking for our car on the street(never more than 200 yards from the front entrance), clean, reasonably spacious rooms for a 2 star hotel, well kept and run with pride by the seemingly ubiquitous owner/operator Bruno. If there are "cons" to this hotel, they would be that there is not always someone at the front desk(tho on call, I imagine) , a narrow little "lobby",and there is no lift/elevator.Our room was one flight up(first floor in european parlance-here in the US some might call the european "ground floor" the first floor). What made our stay so exceptional, beyond the charm of Narbonne, its people and the excitement of the concerts we attended, was Bruno's advice, encouragement and good humor. We came to Narbonne for 5 nights as a base for our attendance at Jordi Savall's(Google him if you're not familiar with him and his music)7th International Music Festival, which was held at the Abbaye de Fontfroide-about 20 minutes by car outside Narbonne. We arrived by car from Barcelona on a Saturday afternoon, without having mapped out the location of the hotel, and knowing only that it was at 6 Rue Rossini, near Les Halles food market.Following street signs to Les Halles we immediately stumbled upon Rue Rossini, and voila! there was the hotel, with a parking spot 30 feet from the front door. Upon meeting Bruno we advised him of a small emergency we were dealing with-medications we had forgotten in Miami were due to be delivered by fedex on Monday. Without hesitation Bruno told us that he had planned to shop on Monday, but would forego it to be sure fedex would have someone to leave the package with (midday it seems the front desk closes-as do most shops etc). The package arrived late monday and a knock on our door announced Bruno with a smile and the fedex delivery. A trip saved! Bruno mapped our best route to the abbaye, made dinner recommendations and reservations, and did everything in his power to enhance our stay in this charming town that sees few American tourists(at least by comparison with other southern French cities(see, e.g. Arles, Nimes etc). Bruno speaks fluent English, French,Spanish and German(and more) and is invariably gracious and has a great sense of humor. His restaurant recommendations were excellent(all of the restaurants are in the top few in trip advisor's ratings for Narbonne--and from our experience, deserve to be), his knowledge of the town and surrounding towns for day trips etc was excellent and his advice freely given.
We found the people in Narbonne to be extremely friendly and solicitous-no matter how badly we mangled our French. The merchants in Les Halles were amiable and happy to offer samples of their food, and the local street market around the corner from the hotel(Saturdays til 2 and Tuesdays(or Weds-we forget which) to be vastly more interesting, fun and cheaper than the better known , more tourist oriented and bigger Saturday market in Arles-which we spent the morning at.Regardless of where you stay, we're happy to share our experiences and suggestions about Narbonne, just write to me at jemandm24@aol.com.

Super clean...No! Super, super clean! Here there is a sense of duty, responsability and pride in doing a job well.
A simple hotel with clean amenities, A/C, warm greetings, good recommendations for restaurant choices. Owner has a great sense of humour and is delightfull. Will stay there again.

We stayed one night at this hotel after our week on the Canal du Midi, and were very pleased. The location is, as others have said, excellent - on a quiet little side street JUST off a main street across from the market, the canal, and many cafes/restaurants. Our room was big, with a big, wonderful bathroom. It was spotlessly clean, quiet (even though our room looked out on the street), had a good TV and Wifi, and comfortable bed. The rate was also very good, at 70 Euros for the night (in April). Bruno at the front desk was helpful, gave us a map with a few recommended restaurants marked on it (we had dinner at one of these, Le Coq Hardi, and really enjoyed it), and we thought it was the perfect base for wandering around Narbonne (a lovely little city, with Hotel de Ville and cathedral, Lapidaire museum, lovely Canal de Robine, walking streets, market, etc). We walked to the train station for our morning train, and found it to be a pretty easy 20 min walk with luggage. We would stay there again.
