Very few tourists but lots of people out enjoying, quietly and respectfully what must be one of the best park settings in France. "The people's Versailles" and a good place to reflect on the history of Nimes.

After a few weeks of seeing sites that see primarily buildings, it was delightful to wander through this park. It was a sunny day and the water sparkled in the fountains ponds and canals. Many local people were also enjoying a fall afternoon at the park. There is good signage on the key features.

I arrived to the Jardins de la Fontaine close to the evening, before sundown. It is a beautifully serene place with a subtle sense of history surrounding the walker. There are canals which this September already had leaves floating about and there was a sense of time passing. I took the walk with a local friend and we met a famous painter there who later took us to his gallery. Felt like a very appropriate ending to a perfectly peaceful walk in these subtle and wonderful gardens full of beautiful trees even the locals did not know the name of. Le Jardin is lovely and even pictorial without trying.

Make the climb all the way up - not that bad a climb. When you start, all you see are statues and gravel paths, but keep going and the great plantings will come.

but it was definitely better than average. Its a nice park. Roman interest with the ruined Temple of Diana and the Tour Magne at the top of the hill. But other than for the latter, you don't need to go further than the foot of park.
