Grand Hotel de Nimes
Ranked #32 of 36 Hotels in Nimes
Reviewed October 24, 2013

The hotel is situated at the edge of Nimes, very close to main transport links for the surrounding area and also with a bus stop opposite for trips into town.

The room we had was very nice, a decent size and nice views over the town without much road noise. The receptionist who greeted us on check in was excellent - she spent some time explaining to us where the sights were, how to get the bus and marked on a map the stops in town.

We had one meal in the restaurant which was ok but no more than that. Breakfast was however very good with a wide selection and good service.

There is plenty of parking on site.

We returned to this hotel after staying for a few days 12 months ago.

The good : the hotel appearance has been considerably improved particularly in the pool and bar / verandah areas - whether you like the color scheme is moot. The staff are very friendly and helpful and quickly acted (within their limitations - see below) to solve our problems. The Executive rooms have recently been renovated to a good standard. We didn't eat in the hotel this time so can't comment.

The bad: Nimes is a warm place (30C+) in the summer and the air conditioning is totally ineffective. In our first room it was blowing warm air out - I reported this to the front desk who immediately moved us to a room which in their words "was a bit better" but quite frankly not much and we spent the next 4 nights sleeping on top of the bed with the a/c going full belt. This problem was mentioned by other guests who we struck up a conversation with in the lift and who had encountered the same problems. The other downside to moving rooms was that our original room had good wifi reception whilst the new one had a poor signal which frustratingly dropped out frequently.

I have travelled the world for the last 30+ years and have stayed at many 4 star hotels on many continents - this one is kidding itself that it falls into this category and at an advertised rack rate of €249 per night for an Executive Room, the least you would expect is a decent a/c system. I will not be staying again if I return to Nimes next year.

Where to begin? This place is a decorator's nightmare in the middle of nowhere. The staff is decent and so is the breakfast but otherwise the hotel has absolutely nothing else going for it. One of the people in our party returned to find her window open and empty beer bottles and rags in her bathroom. AVOID!

We were there as part of a choir tour so we essentially filled the hotel.
The good:
1. The bed, at least in my room, was comfortable
2. The bathroom and the room were clean.
3. The price apparently was good, though I didn't pay directly.
4. There is a full breakfast
5. The pool is reasonable

The bad:
1. The neighborhood is industrial and there is no place nearby to walk or run
2. The decor of the hotel looks like a bordello circa 1980. The purple and brown walls with the psychedelic clashing paintings, gold butterflies and even painted ceilings are something to behold (not).
3. The free wireless is impossible to get on to when the hotel is crowded. Apparently, only a limited number of people can use it at one time.
4. The breakfast is ample but it was difficult to just get a cup of coffee; the carafes were never refilled. And the room itself was depressing.
5. The elevator fits only a few people so most of us took the stairs, even up 7 flights. The carpets were ripped and stained in the stairwells.
6. Many of the guest rooms had stained, ripped carpets and some also had bordello decor.
7. When you come into the hotel from the gated car park, you feel like you're entering a crack house.

There must be better places to stay in Nimes.

We have stayed at this Holiday Inn several times, But it seems to be going backwards, The room
we had smelt strongly of tobacco Smoke which was in the Curtains and everywhere, Infact when
we got into the lift to go down stairs a Guy got out of the lift already smoking.
We will not stay in this hotel ever again, The receptionist was quite rude when we tackled her
about our concerns about smoking, And we do know that they are ignoring people smoking
in rooms and thisill lead to a fire sooner or later as there is no one ckecking rooms, The curtains
in our room were burnt and when we returned to the Hotel in the evening a guy was smoking in
the corridor. Bad News>
