Owner description: The Maison Carree in Nimes is the only Roman ancient temple completely preserved. The inspiration for the design of the Maison Carree came from the temples of Apollo and Mars Ultor in Rome. Inside, you will discover a 23 minutes film "Nemausus, the birth of Nimes" which explains how Nimes became a roman city and shows the construction of the main roman sights of the city (Arena, Maison Carree, Tour Magne).

We did not go inside, only viewed it from the outside. It is pretty amazing to see an ancient temple in its full glory! After visiting Rome and living in Greece, this is a work of incredible architecture. The town of Nimes is doing a good job to keep this monument looking good.

We enjoyed the view both during the day and in the evening. Don't miss ogling at this monument if you are in Nimes.

Besides the Arena, this is the other symbol that is synonymous with Nimes.

It's hard to imagine how this place could be so perfectly preserved despite its age and troubled history. But here it is for us to enjoy, thanks to some great restoration work.

The little Museum inside was OK --- but nothing beats admiring this building from the outside.

The first ancient building we came across on our visit to Nimes and we just stopped in our tracks! Beautiful, and it was lovely to grab a drink at a cafe right next to it and sit outside marvelling up at it!
Stunningly preserved, a must-see!

Nimes is an intimate little city and the Maison Carree is one its wonders. One of the best preserved Roman temples it was built in 4 AD. It is best seen from the outside from one of the bars nearby.

The outside is well worth viewing from the street/plaza. However the inside is simply filled with a corny 3D film experience which was very disappointing. There is zero historical content inside. Certainly don't bother with the inside if you're on a tight time or money budget!
