“Great stay and great food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 10, 2012

A little hard to find, but well worth it if you want a full size room and don't need to stay in the city. The lunch in the main floor restaurant was delicious and at an affordable price. The staff was extremely friendly and attentive. Yes, this is a "school", but the attitude of the employees was 5 star. Would definitely would stay there again when back in Nimes.

Room Tip: stay higher up and use the outside shade to shut out light and noise.

We arrived a little tired after our trip from Lyon, and were relieved to pull into the parking lot of the hotel. We had made a mistake for our reservation and had picked an incorrect date, but the staff kindly found us a room anyway at our original rate. The room was of a reasonable size, well-maintained and decorated in a contemporary way. We were with two small children so we went to the buffet, and were pleased by the selection of appetizers and deserts, with barbequed meat for the main. My little 4-year old daughter ate more than I'd seen her eat for most of the trip. The place seemed to have a fair amount of package tour business but it didn't seem to impact the food quality. From the hotel, despite being near the highway, was just a short trip the next day to the Roman centre. It was a good visit, made so by the professional and courteous staff.

we had a great stay at Hotel Vatel. It was in the middle of nowhere however it wasn't a problem for us as we had a car. The room itself was luxurious and excellent value for money for 93 pounds. The gastronomique restaurant on the top floor had a variety of set menus starting at €31 per person. Food was excellent. The dessert cart offered a great range of choices and it was certainly a great treat. We would highly recommend it. The serivce we got throughout our stay was attentive. Some of the staff are clearly hospitality students however they tried very hard and a couple of them spoke excellent English.

1.it is in the middle of no where, overlooking a highway.
2. We were initially checked into room 117. The receptionist accompanied us to our room. The door was wide open. Maintanance work was being completed. There was dust all over and the bathhroom was in a mess. The receptionist said we must wait in the room, albeit filthy while she sends housekeeping.
3. She took us down with all our baggage back to reception. She now gave us 118, which we had to take all the luggage to.
4. The bath water would not run out the plug hole. We called reception and a different receptionist arrived with maintenance . The problem was solved while the receptionist waited. However she went into the room and had a discussion with myself while lay naked after my bath in the bed. She seemed unconcerned that such was highly inappropriate.
5. At 6am people returned back drunk from their night in the room above screaming and shouting like olden day football hooligans. I called reception to complain but the lady responded by saying she would set me a wake up call!
6. At 9am furniture was being moved around for 30 minutes in the room above by the cleaning staff.
7. The coffee machine was musty and dirty.

The manager was unable to deal with our complaints and seemed overwhelmed.

The staff are too junior.

This is not what I expect of a so called 4 star.
Rather take your chances at the lower rated hotels in the town centre.

Room Tip: Do not stay here.

We spent one night in this hotel in June 2010 while travelling to Spain with our car. We arrived at dinner time and got a nice room. We ordered dinner in our room and we got everything cold. So we were disappointed about that, but the worst was still to come. Our room was just in front of a kind of HLM building (HLM is the french name for the social housing buildings) where a lot of weird and seemingly dangerous people were on their balcony shouting and screaming and singing the whole damn night, just to bother the guests of the hotel. We couldn't sleep one moment and I've never seen anything like that in my life. We left the morning after and for sure we will never come back.

Room Tip: Just don't go

A really special and well equipped hotel.
The rooms are spacious, wonderful private terrace and especially the bathroom is great. The, so important, little things make the difference. The well thought through design of the rooms, the shutters on the balcony, especially when it is hot and the chocolatrs, the coffe machine, ...

The kitchen of the brasserie is really good. Show cooking in the morning, just what you want and would like to have during you well-deserved holiday.

Special is also the service. Since Vatel is also a hospitality education institution, most of the service people are new to the business, and coming from all over the world. They are very friendly and eager to learn. No so experienced of course, but with a warm charme and enthousiasm.

The Spa and swimming pool are great.

We originally came only for two days, but we stayed a full week.

We find the 25 negative reports, of which 12 "terrible" difficult to understand. We think that this hotel is not at all run down, that the rooms are very clean and comfortable with faultless modern furniture and fittings, good quality beds, pillows and linen, that the complimentary expresso machine is a perk rarely found in 4 star properties. Airco is hot or cold at request. Wifi is fast and free everywhere, the F&B fair and honest. The young students of the Vatel hotel school are charming and trying their best at all times. The room price is very reasonable. Maybe, I am desperately trying to find an explanation for the poor reports, some travelers were expecting a charming boutique in Nîmes center. That is definitely not the case. Vatel is located in a suburb next to a huge hospital and the hotel building is somewhat factory-like. It's location close to the motorway is ideal for a stop avoiding the hassle of Nîmes traffic jams. Here again it is only a question of "what do you expect".

Room Tip: Our room was facing SE, we were not disturbed by road noise
