Wonderfully creative food and an attentive, friendly staff ensured that I had a great evening at Le Grillardin.
The salmon tartare and the foie gras with strawberries were both to die for delicious. They also have a nice selection of local wines to go with whatever you may choose to eat.
The square on which the restaurant is located is very lively at night.
Note: most restaurants in Montpellier don't start serving dinner until 19:30 (7:30pm), at the earliest, so don't plan on an early dinner!
Be sure to reserve, because they book up fast!

We stayed on the outside of Montpellier but on the good advice of our Arena hotel desk clerk, drove into the old town for dinner. HE had suggested three restaurants but NONE were open on SUnday night. We checked Trip Advisor and phoned a few more before we found this one serving. So we just werent sure what we were going to get......good reviews, but a long time to find it in the one-way oldtown streets. Wow, it was lovely - we did the tasting menu, with their wine pairings. First course to last it was superior - local and traditional ingredients with a flair for modernista presentation. Wines were good to great. The Secretos Bellotas main course was the best ever pork we have ever eaten, the scallop Thai broth mix a refreshing change and the Foie well-paired with the sweet white. The waitress was very helpful and descriptive - sure did talk French fast tho!

This is a great restaurant - I've now eaten here a few times over the past year. The ambiance outside is lovely, with several tables overlooking one of Montpellier's leafy green little squares. The first time I ate here I was blown away by many of the dishes - the camembert dish baked in their chimney in particular was very creative - and I have not been disappointed since then. This very last time though I was a bit surprised to see that the prices have gone up. There used to be a 30 Euro menu (I think!), but the cheapest menu is now 42 Euros, though admittedly it has 5 courses. Considering that this price is creeping up on the 49 Euro lunch menu option still available at the Michelin starred Jardin des Sens, which is a world above Grillardin in terms of quality and ambiance, 42 Euros no longer seems good value for money. Of course one can still eat 1 or 2 courses for 20 or 30 Euros a la carte. The service as always is super-friendly, and it's a pleasure to while away a few hours here.

Despite advance booking and a less than full restaurant, 4 of us found ourselves squeezed onto a table between the bar and the small open kitchen, not an ideal vantage point, but this was made up by the excellent quality of the food and attentive service. Starter of foie gras poelee on a bed of greens, main of noix St Jacques with artichoke ravioli were both beautifully presented and skilfully executed. Portions are unusually large which meant that dessert was a difficult undertaking but too good to pass up. As it was a cold late winter evening we were seated indoors but the tables overlooking the small square outside would be beautiful no doubt in warmer weather.

We went here twice during our stay in Montpellier, and were pleased on both occasions. The place is fairly small, and reservations are essential even at theoretically less busy times. Service is friendly and efficient. Food is generally good, though on Monday night ('chef's night off'?) one of the dishes was not quite up to par. Wines are good, featuring a number of local options. Being crowded and noisy, atmosphere is nothing to speak of. Prices are the same as at a lot of inferior places, so it is good value for money.
