“Best in Montpellier”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 18, 2013

My wife and I just returned from a 6 night stay in this wonderful hotel. Managed by a mother-daughter team, it is situated in one of the old buildings in the central city. All mod-cons have been installed with great care to keep the building as it was designed. The rooms are very comfortable, and well appointed. The best is surely the wonderful service. When is the last time you were told they would be happy to bring fresh coffee to your room after breakfast?

Room Tip: Room 17 is on the top floor, overlooking an old cafe. Very quiet (this is the pedestrian only part...

Our three days in Montpellier were a total delight. The town is beautiful - we walked everywhere although there are trams to transport you should you need it. Plenty of good places to eat and drink, and, being a large university town, plenty of not-too-expensive eateries too. The hotel was terrific. The staff were pleasant and extremely helpful, and anyone who is a fan of Acorn Antiques will recognise Mrs. Overall! All in all, the sort of place you could go back to in a minute. Transportation links good too - we flew in, and took the train out. Taxi from the airport to the hotel was 30 euros.

Hotel du Palais

When I have to visit Montpellier I try to book as far ahead as possible. I need to be sure of a room at the Hotel du Palais. The rooms are not huge but they are comfortable and clean. It is set in a lovely, peaceful square, near the Arc de Triomphe, a few minutes walk from the center of town.

What makes the place is the owner, a dignified lady of grand-motherly age. At first glance she looks quite severe, a no-nonsense sort of person but when you come down for breakfast and she asks: “Good morning, did you sleep well” you know you are not in a run-of-the-mill hotel. Then comes breakfast! A croissant, a pain-au-chocolat, a role of freshly baked bread, some crisp bread, a little pot of home-made jam and another of orange marmalade are already on the table. She arrives with a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice and a pot of yoghurt. Not the synthetic stuff; real yoghurt that you will not find in a supermarket. Then comes a bowl of fruit salad, fresh fruit, perfect. You have just poured from a generous jug of excellent coffee or a good pot of tea when she trots in carrying a small glass of honey: “Try this in your yoghurt, its really tasty”. Not a forced “Have a nice day” sort of hospitality. Just a simple little hotel.

Room Tip: The hotel is on a lovely quiet square. Just ask the lady; she will do her best

This hotel is exactly as I remember the good value, traditional hotels that France was so famous for. Communications were easy, both in French and English. It is charming, in a lovely part of Montpellier. The room was cool, very clean with a good bathroom, and a typical small balcony with shutters (see photo). It was not their fault that some students, probably, in this great university city rollicked home at 4.00 am. In compensation there is virtually no traffice. Everything was as it should be. "book early to avoid disappointment" if you value the hospitality of old school French hoteliers. Delightful hotel cat looked pretty happy too.

Room Tip: Room 16 was 2nd floor on corner with a nice view down a narrow street.

Ideally located, 5 minutes by foot to the place de la comedie, next to the arc the triomphe. It's a soooo nice french style builiding close to many bistrot and just in the city center.
The rooms are provided with air conditioning, wifi free access very fast, minifridge, a shower, nice furniture french style.
Very good price/quality value.
I stayed at the top floor and I had a so cute small terrace facing the roofs.
The colors, the personnel, the ambiance, all seemd really so french and so cofortable and nice.

4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 30, 2012

We stayed two nights at this hotel in April 2012 and found it to be pretty much everything we wanted for such a stay : warm, comfortable and clean, within walking distance of things we enjoyed seeing and wonderful eating too.
The bedroom and ensuite bathroom were by Australian and New Zealand customs small, but we knew this would be the case in advance having used TA's other reviews and looked at the website. There was a dear little balcony behind the shutters overlooking a treesy 'place' and the decor was equally charming.
We speak enough French to get by and hotel staff were helpful and spoke enough English to help us with the necessary booking in and out procedures and we were happy.
Two things, however decided us not to rate this hotel 'excellent' though. The first was that smoking is plainly ok within the hotel somewhere or perhaps at least near the aircon system: we could smell fresh cigarette smoke frequently coming into our room and even throughout the night . We strongly dislike this and actually are always dismayed to see how many people still smoke everywhere in France. We have become used this area of success in NZ health promotion and like being able to breathe fresh clean air -everywhere. We also don;t think this is a very good safety factor in an old building where access in and out is not that fantastically easy.
Secondly, we did not like having to leave our room key in a basket on the public stairs for the maid in the morning and nor did we like being so discourteously asked to leave it when we left the hotel -every time. We consider this insecure. We are used to being able to lock up our possessions in our room when we leave it and take the key, although we don't leave passports and anything similar behind of course.
While we appreciate that is an old and beautifully historic hotel and the doors are old with large old keyholes (and indeed the key we were given was enormous and attached to a large heavy 'thingammy' -presumably so it would not be taken) -we think perhaps a second key could indeed be cut for the maid! At the least please don't ask guests to leave their key in front of other members of the public at the front desk or hang it on the numbered hook so that it is plain to anyone keen to know that the room is unoccupied just now. In fact, we also like to be asked before our room is serviced each day as mostly we would choose for it not to be. We don't think its necessary. (Nothing like coming back to the pillows you want to put your cheek on with the dirty old cover or cushions which have been put on the floor while the bed is made resting right back on them either -ugh) And who wants their toiletries rearranged and personal bits and pieces dusted anyway for such a short stay. If we need a clean towel we will request one -mostly there are heaps in the bathroom to suffice for a one or two night stay.
Not to end on a moaning note though: Hotel du Palais has great reviews on this site and it is worthy of them. A lovely French experience.

Room Tip: If the smoking thing concerns you ask to be well aware from any possibility of inhaling smoke, but l...

The location of this hotel is definitively difficult to beat. Right in the centre of the old town, close to the shops, bars and restaurants of Montpellier Centre. We came by car and parking is only available a little further away but the staff was helpful in advising a cheaper parking close by. The rooms were clean and the breakfast very good.
Our room however was not the best since it was partially in the sous-terrain and so our window opened straight on the street. The rooms upstairs are probably the better option.

Room Tip: The room downstairs has only a small window that open to the street, not ideal on a summer evening.
