We had a table on the terrace from which to observe the sunset behind charming Collioure. Tres romantique! This a place to dress for dinner, although people wore fancy to frumpy. The food was great to good. Great was the rouget. Good was a beautiful chocolate dessert that didn't live up to its prettiness. Wine and service were quite good. It is correctly ranked with one Michelin etoile.

Although the restaurant La Balette got mixed reviews, we decidied to try it on October 27th because we were staying at the associated hotel Le Relais des Trois Mas which has one of the most spectacular settings in Colluiore. The food was good, but not exceptional. The staff seemed a little indifferent and their cold, uptight and pretentious service overwhelmed the entire experience. The sommelier had such an attitude during our interactions throughout our meal that is made for an unpleasant evening. His pricey wine recommendation was of questionable quality. Unfortunately, my spouse did the tasting and accepted it when it should have been rejected. We barely drank it - it was the worst bottle of wine that we had while in Collioure where there are some very nice local wines. His wine selection seemed to be an extension of his somewhat aggressive, unfriendly demeanor.

This restaurant supposedly has a one star Michelin rating - if pretentious service, copious foams and a constant stream of specialized silverware is part of the rating system, then maybe it is deserved. The setting and view is very nice, although the interior space of the restaurant isn't very attractive.

We had dinner at the restaurant La Voile de Neptune next door on several other evenings and felt that the food and service were superb. We really enjoyed the dinner with wine pairings.

The location has a beautiful view, the fish was fresh and pretty well cooked (not salt though), the appetizers and desserts delicious, so go for the food. But do not pretend to have a drink outside to enjoy the wonderful location, or suggest anything that they haven't decided it is "the way to do it", because you will be treated like a foolish peasant! Not all waiters were so humorless and rude though, but the one really left a mark!

If my mother was reading this she would tell me to 'get a life', and 'if that's all you've got to complain about, then your priorities are wrong'. And she would be right. But at this level of cooking, it's about comparison with other starred places, and the food lacks the precision of say Tom Kitchen or Lisa Allen at Northcote. For example, the main course of John dory had 8 pieces of different veg; Tom/Lisa wouldve made it sing with 4. The service was poor. We were a dessert light on our menu, and everyone else was given marshmallow with their coffee. After we had paid and were leaving, the marshmallow waiter (there was one!) rushed over to give us ours.
