“Worth the effort...but a couple of helpful(?) points”
Reviewed September 17, 2013

If you miss the signs, on entry, about how to gain access to the inner castle walls ('remparts'), then there are no other direction signs within the cite. You must go to the chateau and be prepared to spend €8.50. Also, don't rely on the public W.C.s, (unless you are male and only need a 'comfort break'): Buy a drink at a cafe/restaurant and use their loos.

“A Medieval Rampart walk”
Reviewed September 16, 2013

The walled city and chateaux of Carcassoone is one of the finest examples of medieval military architecture and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Apart from wandering through its narrow, twisting cobbled streets a MUST is a walk round it's Ramparts. It gives stunning views over the old town and across the rolling countryside which has changed little since it was built, if one excludes the more recent town that has grown to one side. It needs little imagination, (or a read of one or two of Kate Moss's books based on the region), to see the goings on with the Cathars of the region. More so if one visits the Torture Museum, I should imagine, though I didn't venture there myself! The Ramparts walk is well worth the 8.50 euro fee.
There is loads of atmosphere in the old streets despite possibly too many tourist shops. Some good local food can be had in the many restaurants and cafes. They are not all tourist clip joints.

“Like something out of a fairy tale”
Reviewed September 16, 2013

We were enchanted by Carcassonne from the moment we saw it in the distance. It was like walking into history. The only drawback is the over-commercialization once you are inside. If you can overlook that, you will enjoy the experience.
