One word - incredible. You will need to be fairly fit to get up to most of these, though even if you are not able to climb to the top it is worth going to the base and looking up - how on earth were they built?!! Peyrepertuse is the best preserved and just astonishing. From there Queribus can be seen in the distance, along with the ridges of mountains that have served as borders/frontiers between France and Spain over the decades. The terrain is beautiful, the views stunning, the history fascinating - even if you don't go into it very heavily, like me! It is so worth the effort to get to the castles - and the roads on the approach are just as worthwhile. A really beautiful part of France.

If you have any sense of justice and history you will visit these sites just out of respect.
Yes, some of them are a bit difficult to get to but the journey is rewarding from several levels including the historic, the panoramic and the fitness

There are so many ther's a danger of "castle overload"
The one that really stunned was the one at Mornas, you just look at it and think, "how did they build this?"

We drove there in a hire car and parked at the topmost car park (2nd car park well above the village). There is still a fair walk from there and it can be quite steep at times so not suitable for anyone infirm and sturdy shoes are best. There is an entry charge (8 euros per person I think). We paid an extra 4 euros each for the recorded tour phone. We both hated it and both stopped using it after 10 irritating minutes so we wouldn't recommend it. A guide book said that the walk to the top was not worth the effort - but luckily we ignored this advice as we loved it! The castle/fortress remains were fascinating and the view tremendous.
