A wonderful experience but the walk is not for the feinthearted! Our guide was very knowlegeable of the history surrounding the Cathar Castles and surrouning area. Highly recommended.

I knew of the Cathar castles but had never visited before. Having chosen Peyrepertuse and Queribus as two of the best, and in close proximity to each other, I visited both and my expectations were exceeded by some way! It is impossible to imagine how they were constructed, way up on the rock face high up on mountains. Queribus is a 10 minute climb from the car park and Peyrepertuse a 20 minute walk. Both are quite exceptional - definitely the two finest castles I have ever visited. Although ruined, there is plenty of the original building intact, including the rib-vaulted ceilings of the rooms below the keep in Queribus. The views from the top of the keeps are breathtaking, across mountains and valleys and right to the Mediterranean Sea. I would strongly recommend them to anyone who has not seen them - they are quite sensational!

I saw these castles through the gloom of a severe Pyreneean storm, Both castles are situated on the tops of adjacent towering cliffs. You probably get the best view of them from the road. There is a track up to the castles but the weather prevented us from attempting the drive.

Very worth the hike to the top to see the views and absorb the history behind the site.
