“Perfect house in perfect location”
Reviewed May 31, 2016 for a stay in May 2016

Maison du Chateau, Carcassonne, is every bit as good as it appears in the photos in a wonderful very quiet central location between La Cité and La Bastide. The house is within a stone's throw of many local shops and cafés. Particularly good is Le Jardin d'Eté restaurant near the end of the Vieux Pont which has a splendid garden behind it for outdoor eating. Maison du Chateau is close the minor branch of the RIver Aude where you can wander on shady riverside walks upstream beside dramatic weirs and rapids. Walk upstream to the first road bridge and back down the other side of the main branch of the Aude.

The house is very spacious as you can see in the photos with three French windows on the ground floor opening into the garden. The beds are very comfortable and the bed linen immaculate. Wonderfully scented Le Petit Marseillais liquid soap made from olive oil is on every sink and basin in the house making it a fantastic sensory experience simply to wash your hands! There is plenty comfortable garden furniture and a pool which is kept immaculate by twice weekly visits from a husband and wife pool maintenance team. Spare sets of house keys are provided so no-one is without the means of access. In a marvelously equipped and spacious kitchen there is room for a team of guests to work in unison to create meals from the great local produce.

Buy your meat, fish and cheese in Les Halles close to Place Carnot. If you miss the outdoor fruit and vegetable market in the morning at Place Carnot there is a marvellous green grocers at the end of Rue Verdun. There is a small Carrefour supermarket on Place Carnot, too, which is surprisingly well stocked, and a branch of Monoprix nearby. If your shopping is heavy you can get a taxi back home from the rank near the railway station.

Six complementary bottles of wine are supplied at your host's expense by the next door neighbour who is also a wine merchant.

Within a few yards at the back of the house there are three pedestrian routes up to La Cité which is particularly charming at night. Go on to the Vieux Pont to view La Cité from a distance at night with all its floodlit fortifications and towers and then compare it with the the ancient drawing reproduced in the dining room of the house.

There is absolutely nothing negative to report concerning this house, the owner or his conscientious and helpful agent, Nicola Harrington.

HIGHLY recommended!

“Five Star Accommodation in Magical Medieval Town”
Reviewed February 26, 2016 for a stay in February 2016

Review of Carcassonne property
My immediate and extended family, travelling from the UK and America, chose this property for our reunion, and could not have enjoyed our stay more! This is an amazing 3-floor apartment which truly sits in the shadow of the magnificent ramparts of Carcassonne. It is a wonderful accommodation, plenty of room, tastefully decorated, well equipped, beautifully laid out with plenty of room for our 10-person party. We were off-season visitors, and were thrilled with the coziness of the place - a combination of central heating and very efficient wood stoves in the living room and dining/kitchen areas kept us toasty warm! For the summer visitors, there is a wonderful backyard area with a pool and outdoor seating/eating arrangements. Carcassonne is a memorable destination - lots to see and do, and the restaurants are excellent! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would certainly love to return. Thanks, Ashley and team!!

“Fantastic property and location...”
Reviewed August 12, 2015 for a stay in July 2015

Eight of us (two families, 4 children aged 9 - 17) had a fantastic week at Maison du Chateau. The location is stunning. The garden overlooks the ramparts which are floodlit by night, allowing you to sit on the terrasse with a glass of wine and breathe in the history! As we were there during the Carcassonne festival, we enjoyed listening to the nightly concerts from the terrasse, including Sting performing a string of Police numbers.

We managed without a car for the week and there was plenty to fill our time. We flew into Carcassonne airport - a short taxi drive from the house. A 10 minute walk gets you into the centre of the castle which is packed with restaurants, the Chateau Comtal and jousting. A 1/2 hour walk through the new town gets you to the Canal du Midi where you can get boat trips (this was ok but not amazing).

The house itself is of a high standard - a pleasure to stay in. The garden (overlooking the castle) has different sitting areas with lovely furniture (no plastic loungers!). We all enjoyed the pool, which is a good size considering the town location.

Inside was fantastic, loads of space, really clean and everything was great quality. A small point, but as we didn't have a car, it was great to have cleaning products, toiletries and loo rolls for the week.

The case of wine on arrival (and a wine merchant next door!!) was a great bonus, as were the slippers and robes.

Before arrival, booking was easy - the owners came back with answers to our questions very quickly.

We've rented quite a few holiday homes in France, but our experience at Maison du Chateau was by far the best - in terms of quality of house, location and amenities.

This house was just a delight. We loved it and can't thank the owners enough for creating such a lovely environment for our visit to Carcassonne. We were able to cook several stupendous meals and enjoyed the wonderful back yard. And coming home to cool off in the pool in the afternoons after touring the countryside was so relaxing. We loved the wine and bought more. And we enjoyed the proximity to Le Citi and to the local shops. Thanks again!

“Fantastic property in an amazing location”
Reviewed July 26, 2015 for a stay in July 2015

Having rented dozens of properties throughout the world, I have never come across a more helpful and efficient owner. The whole process, from start to finish was faultless.
The property is excellent and, simply, couldn't be better located - incredible views of La Cite (from the back garden), with ease of access to the bars and restaurants of Carcassonne.
Unfortunately, we only stayed for one week - but the experience was a joy.

“Beautiful Villa in Superb Location”
Reviewed July 4, 2015 for a stay in June 2015

We rented this Villa for a family of 8 at the end of June. Firstly the location is excellent as you are only a 10 minute walk to the town and 5 minutes to the castle and Citie. The view of the castle from the back garden is so very near and beautifully lit up at night.

The villa has all the facilities you can need with a well equipped kitchen. It has clearly been renovated in the recent years and tastefully decorated. There is plenty of space for everyone and the veranda/balcony is a great great away from the hot sun during the day. All the rooms were nice and clean with en-suite showers except in one upstairs room. This room did have a bath, sink and toilet. Each room had a hairdryer and beds very comfortable.

There is Wifi within the property as well as washing machine which was much needed for us!

The owners and housekeeper are very accessible on email/phone, as we had a power cut during our stay and needed assistance with the Wifi working again.

The swimming pool is to the back of the garden and a reasonable size. It's worth noting that it is very cold, due to the sun not really getting to it until later in the day. This might be different in July/August. But just worth remembering that we found that we could probably not use it until later in the day when the sun has had a chance to heat it.

Parking is available around the area, and there is a space just outside the villa for a small car.

Overall a fantastic stay was had by us all and we would defiantly recommend this to others.

“First Class Location and Property”
Reviewed June 28, 2015 for a stay in June 2015

Our family of eight enjoyed a superb week in this well appointed and extremely well located property in Carcassonne ( looking up from the garden at the old castle walls is very atmospheric especially in the evenings). Seven days of unbroken sunshine with temperatures peaking at circa 35 degrees also certainly helps.

The property has been recently completely and sympathetically renovated, the swimming pool was a great hit of course with our six year old granddaughter and the various places to eat at the property, due to a well thought out layout, was great. In the mornings the courtyard area was perfect and again in the evenings, while the large open but roofed and railed upper balcony area was great in the mid day heat for lunchtime eating.

The property is large as you would expect for sleeping eight and it provides excellent space for all. The city of Carcassonne is a pure delight, with the castle as a centrepiece and up there in the old city there are some excellent restaurants, of particular note try Jardin De Le Veque , this serves virtually Michelin class food at little more than restaurant prices ( we were Euros 320 for a full evening a la carte meal with much wine for all eight of us) in a beautiful outdoor garden setting. I understand the restaurant is associated to the 5 star hotel also up there which does indeed have a Michelin Star for it's restaurant. For a great Tapas experience try Lescargot, also up there, again full dinner with drinks for eight at Euros 240 ( closed on Wednesdays).

The owners have someone looking after the property ( Nicola) so if you have any issues she is available ( was handy when we needed another fan and she delivered the next day).

Were there any criticisms ?, none that would really qualify as such, my wife thought air con would be great but I disagree, I think it would detract from the property. A large sun brolly for the downstairs courtyard area, covering the table, would be good as without that you can't stand the full sun beating down in the middle of the day ( that's where the upstairs covered balcony area comes into its own but it is away from the kitchen area).

All in all a first class experience ( our first time west of Provence)., the owners should feel rightly proud of what they have there.
