“Handy hotel”
Reviewed July 11, 2013

Usual Etap style hotel within 30min walking distance of the city. Basic rooms with TV, free wi-fi and air-con. Clean and quiet stay with large free secure parking. Buffet breakfast extra or visit the good bakers across the road.

Room Tip: ask for a top floor room which have a better view and are normally quieter

Have used this hotel a number of times. The staff are excellent - friendly and helpful. The twin bedded room option, which is unusual in my experience of the Etap group, is however inadequate in many ways. Two beds take up a lot of space in what is already a fairly small room, there is inadequate space for hanging clothes, and the arrangement of coat-hangers in a corner at the side of a bed is inaccessible. There isn't even a proper chair on which to put clothes. Also the air conditioning did not seem to work while we were there - and it was hot. A regular room would have been more convenient.

First of all ETAP is the low-budget version of Ibis, and probably the price is reasonable for the service. As a single, I paid 36 EUR per night, which was a good deal. However, when I first entered the room I was actually disappointed as the room didn’t match the pictures on booking.com at all, and even though they pretend to be a new hotel, there were stains in the badroom sink, which was right next to the bed and not in a separate bathroom. Both the shower and toilet were in separate ‘cabins’, installed in another corner of the room. The toilet cabin smelled bad and looked dirty as well.

Being inexpensive, the hotel definitely attracts a lot of youngster. The first night there was a group of students who partied until 1 in the morning. Shortly after I checked in I asked the receptionist if, by any chance, they close the doors in the corridors at night, because being on the ground floor, there was a constant noise from the lobby as well (people arriving, going to the second floor, etc). The receptionist told me that the noises I heard were only due to the students, but no problem: they had just checked out. Which obviously wasn’t true as they would only check out the next morning. The receptionist was thus very reluctant to assign me another, more quiet room.

I must add that I had to use ear plugs on all three nights I stayed there as the noise coming from the lobby and from other rooms was really loud. Perhaps it’s best to ask for a room on the second floor if you really want to book the ETAP hotel.

The location is about ten minutes from the Medieval Cité, however, it’s far from the centre of Carcassonne. Going to the railway station easily takes 30-40 minutes (depending on your pace). The area is not attractive at all and there aren’t many nearby restaurants (just a few bakeries). Closest restaurants around were those in La Cité. I deciced to buy a complementary breakfast and I think it was worth the money (a little less than 6 EUR per day). The breakfast buffet may not be very big, but the breads and pastries I had were fresh and tasty.

Another good thing about the room was the bed – the mattress was really great and I slept well (also thanks to the ear plugs).

So overall, I rate this hotel as ‘average’. The helpfulness of the staff could be a bit better, as well as the cleanliness of the rooms and noise reduction (for instance by closing the corridor doors at night, to keep out noises coming from the entrance of the hotel).

Room Tip: I'd ask for a room on the second floor, in order to avoid noises coming from the lobby

Ideal situation for visiting the old city, it will hopefully be improved once it becomes an Ibis Budget Hotel by being upgraded. We found it quite noisy at night as we had a room overlooking the road, and the double glazing didn't work.

We stayed for one night. We had to ho there cause we arrived out of plans in carcassonne. The city is amazing, will suggest to everybody.. but avoid this hotel. Guess the train stations bathrooms are better and cleaner.. hairs everywhere, even in the bed. They say there is a parking but there is no control on it, reception empty at night. And it costs so much for the value. Goin the center, pay a bunch more money but enjoy this beautiful environment instead of spendin the night with the fear of bacteria and theefs.
