Description: This place was recommended by a local as THE place to get a good steak in Carcassonne. We were the only english speakers in what was obviously a very local place. Steaks are cooked over a fire in a corner of the restaurant. Food was not expensive, but boy was it good. This was a real find and while easily accessible on foot from the mideaval city, it was also totally off the beaten path.

“Great Local Flavors at a Reasonable Price”
Reviewed October 11, 2013

We were looking for small restaurants favored by locals on our trip and this one hit the mark perfectly. Located on a side street below the old Cite, this restaurant is easily missed but worth seeking out. We were the only English-speaking customers on a quiet weeknight. We spoke a little French and the owner spoke a little English which worked out well. Service was friendly and helpful in choosing the wine selection. We both had salads which were fresh ingredients and a meal in themselves. My husband had the steak and I had salmon, both very good and came with baked potato and sour cream. Local wine, coffee and dessert, all for under 70 Euros. Would recommend.

“Great meal, good neighborhood, "real" French food”
Reviewed June 27, 2012

Four of us were on a canal boat trip on the Canal du Midi, piloting our own boat. We were following a book written by Pixie and Ralph--I forget their last names, but they have written a detailed book on this canal, and in it recommended this restaurant in the historic city of Carcassone. The food and service were great. Owners were very nice. The wine wasn't fantastic, but it was a neighborhood restaurant, not a Michelin four star outfit.

“Good french food, homely atmosphere.”
Reviewed August 12, 2011

Located in the Ville Basse area of the city, L'Oeil is a restaurant you probably wouldn't find if you hadn't been told about it and indeed that's how we found it; it was recommended by a cafe owner where we had breakfast one morning. The restaurant is run by two ladies, one of whom was our hostess for the evening. She was friendly and made us feel at home as soon as we arrived. It was quiet when we visited but there were some locals eating at a nearby table, which is usually a good sign. The food here is classic French cuisine cooked over a wood fire, a method which seems to be popular in these parts. We shared an excellent starter of Foie Gras, followed by two Sirloin steaks, cooked perfectly to our requirements and full of taste and flavour.
With a shared dessert and a nice bottle of local wine, the entire meal was very reasonably priced. If you're looking for good, inexpensive, down to earth French food in a friendly setting, put your eye on L'Oeil (pardon the awful pun).
