We stayed four nights in this hotel. There are three different buildings and our room was in the Comte Roger building across the street from the main building and reception. The room was small and lacked the character that you might be looking for in a building inside la cité. Nevertheless it was comfortable and clean (we were not in Carcassonne to spend time in our room), and the shower room was warm, clean, and well laid out. I was awakened by rubbish collection and other workers rather too early in the morning for my liking, but my wife slept through the noise. The breakfast buffet in the main building offered a reasonable selection of food and breakfast was included in our room rate (not always the case). The common areas inside the main building (there were none in our building) are limited to the reception area and are therefore not suitable for quiet reflection. We did sit in the very pleasant garden occasionally to rest our weary bones, but the temperature frustrated a long stay. In summer it would be a beautiful oasis. The outstanding things about the hotel are its location and the universally friendly and helpful staff.
We arrived from the airport by taxi and our driver phoned ahead to arrange for us to be collected from the car park. It was pelting down with rain and we waited in the taxi after we had paid, until the friendly hotel driver arrived to transfer us to the hotel through the narrow streets of la cite. A similar arrangement worked smoothly on our departure. Overall this was a good experience and we were happy with the hotel, but we might have been even happier if we had been in the main building in a room with more character.

Room Tip: If you book on line you take pot luck with the room. Perhaps you can discuss the rooms if you book b...

The hotel is IN the castle. You have to leave your car in the free area outside and a mini mini van will pick you up. Otherwise it is impossible to walk around with big luggage.. All narrow pedestrian alleys. The setting beautiful, the attention superb, the rooms small, lack of character, but again you are IN the castle. At night is an incredible experience when all tourist disappear and it is for you the whole place..

Staying within the walls of La Cite is quite an experience. When all the crowds have gone you really feel that you are living in a castle. The hotel is lovely, very atmospheric and comfortable. The annexe rooms lack character but this is more than made up for by the fact that they are set around a lovely garden, which in summer will be quite delightful.
We felt breakfast was good, although the room was a little crowded around the buffet table at times. The hotel Brasserie served excellent evening meals .

What a great location for exploring the walled city of Carcassonne. Free carparking and picked up and taken to the hotel .What a wonderful, if a little hair raising, going through the narrow streets in small van that picked us up.Staff at the reception where wonderfully helpful. The only disappointing thing was that our bedroom was in an annex and the room was a pleasant standard hotel room . We had hoped for some charactor. Breakfast was a typical continental although there had been sausages and egg which where finished and never replenished. If you are going to visit Carcassonn I you have to stay in a hotel within the walled city.

On arrival the reception staff couldn't do more to help, they were completely charming, helpful and very professional but in a relaxed manor. Whilst the room was not large it was really comfortable and well maintained by the housekeeping.
Breakfast in the 'breakfast room' was everything you could ask for even as late as 10.30 am.....
Again at the front desk any questions were answered efficiently.
A great place to stay

Room Tip: Rooms in the main section seem very good.

We were touring round France with friends from the USA, and wanted them to experience being in the heart of the old city. We chose the Best Western Le Donjon, and were not disappointed as the welcome on arrival at Reception was warm and efficient.

The arrangements for arrival are interesting: vehicles are sensibly prohibited from the old city during the day, and so cars are parked at the foot of the citadel and guests are collected by the shuttle vehicles: show your booking confirmation on arrival at the lower car park, and someone will be sent to collect you. There follows what can only be described as a mind-boggling (and spine-mangling) trip up through archways and narrow cobbled twisting streets (remember The Italian Job - the Michael Caine version?) in a vehicle which has certainly had its share of scrapes with the old city! If you wish to bring your car up after hours, then the hotel has a secure car park but beware, the trip back down again, which must be completed before 10am, is complicated and confusing, plus you must have the driving skills to cope with all the twists and turns. Do not attempt this in a 4 x 4 - it simply will not fit.

This hotel is full of character as befits a building of such history, and our rooms were beautifully appointed. Each had its own private patio area, screened from the main gardens by hedging & shrubs, with furniture so that you could sit and enjoy the peaceful setting, which more than made up for the absence of a view.

The beds were really comfortable, the linen high quality, the bathroom spacious and equipped with every comfort. We chose not to eat in the hotel for either dinner or breakfast, so cannot comment on the food, but given the quality in every other respect, we imagine it to be excellent.

We would certainly recommend this hotel to anyone wishing to stay in the heart of the old city.

We parked outside the very impressive city walls, a cheerful fellow picked us up, charming city, great lobby, a polite and smiling desk clerk (Oscar). But the room was a little small…and there was not one single drawer for storage. The heat was controlled from the desk! While I understand that heat can be problem in shoulder seasons and that in more difficult economic times one must economize, it did present a real problem for one with a sensitive wife. The shower is the single most dangerous shower I’ve ever been in. It was like showering on glass covered with olive oil…and there’s a lip. Meager towels and an internet connection that disconnects much too easily added to a relatively unhappy.

The one fabulously redeeming element might have been the almost lush common areas on the ground floor…EXCEPT FOR the continuous and sometimes blasting music. I will never understand why restaurants and lobbies like this one are filled with irritating music. No one comes to these places for the music! It should be completely unobtrusive and, for the weary traveler, a quiet, comfortable place to read or talk is something to be desired. We ate at the restaurant and it was just ordinary. We looked at what they offered for breakfast and passed on it.

Room Tip: Ask to see the room first.

Dear Sir,
Thank you for taking the time to let me know about the different aspects of your stay with us, which I read with much attention. Comments from our clients are one of the best means for us to improve our service and to increase guest satisfaction.

The very changeable weather in the last few days made us decide to keep the heating on, as barely two days ago, the weather was still chilly. With regards to the bathroom, the shower tiling and the bathtub surfacing were certified and sold as non-slip by our supplier. However I have noted your comment and will have our technical service check on this immediately. Where the music is concerned, I have passed on your remarks to those of our staff at the Reception who take care of putting on music.
Once again I thank you for your comments and also for your nice remark for our clerk Oscar.
Yours sincerely
Hermine Pujol
