Nice located hotel just in the centre of Versailles. It is interesting to find market just near the hotel. The breakfast is offered only on extra payment. It is light (eg, cheese, butter, cereals, bread, etc.). Coffee is of good quality. It is possible to make tea or coffee in the room. It is old style hotel, floors are creaking. Sometimes it was a feeling that somebody is coming into your room. Once we asked reception to change our towels, may-be waitress forgot our room. Reception is friendly. Wi-fi is for free. Overall I think the price is rather too high for such 3 star hotel (149 euros per night).

Stayed here for 3 nights and what a great location. Set in the corner of the market square and surrounded by bars and restaurants, it was the perfect. They have a courtyard with off street parking, the staff were friendly and helpful and the room was clean and comfortable. It was a great base for a few days, visiting the palace and exploring the area and easy to get a train into Paris for the day.

While it bills itself as 'the most charming hotel in Versailles', which might be a bit of an exaggeration, the Hotel de Cheval Rouge, can certainly take pride in its central location. Equally important for me on this trip was the large secure (they close and lock the doors at night) car park. Its approach might seem intimidating along the narrow street fringing the market then through a narrow portal, but it can accomodate even reasonably large vehicles. If leaving early, you'll have to mix it with market traffic however.
Unless you're paying a fortune, don't expect any great luxury from French hotels and you won't find it here. That said, the superior room that I took was spacious, clean and quiet - and everything worked. I stayed here once before a few years ago and it seemed to have had some refurbishment since then. Breakfast is taken in a room overlooking the busy market and you can amuse yourself looking at the bustle as you work your way through the cereals, baguettes, croissants, cheese and jam on offer. It's all pretty basic but it's good and there's plenty of it - you can even take a bottle of water for your day.
There's no restaurant but the market area is crowded with them so you have plenty of choice. A short walk will take you to other areas of Versailles if you want. Versailles itself is relatively compact and the Chateau is within easy walking distance. The town is well served by transportation with three RER stations providing trains to get you speedily to various parts of Paris and a Mobilis ticket will give you unlimited access to most forms of transport in the area.
The staff are friendly in a Parisien way and deal with you efficiently and well. It's good value for money although the car parking and breakfast (and a small local tax) are extra.
The Hotel du Cheval Rouge is a good, functional, well-located establishment and is especially recommended for car drivers.

Room tip: Superior rooms are spacious and overlook the car park in the hotel courtyard so are also quiet

Location, location, location. The Cheval Rouge is situated in an area that is as quirky and as vibrant as the hotel. The area is the market area of Versailles, the market consists of 4 buildings set in quadrants and outside areas that market vendors use. Each day (apart from Monday, it’s closed) different vendors attend selling different wears. It’s important to stress that very little if any noise is created by the market traders.

Surrounding the outside of the market buildings are an abundance of restaurants, bistro’s and cafe’s. Very close by to the “square” are McD’s, BK and Subway, plus, various independent Boulanger’s and patisserie’s selling wonderful sandwiches and cakes. Therefore, eating out is not a problem.

The hotel claims that the palace of Versailles is 5 minutes away and it is, by car. I do have to be fair, I don’t know the area and there may well be a quick route that does take 5 mins by foot. But for us, we found it closer to 20 minutes, not including distractions, which are many.

The hotel gets it quirky-ness as follows. The majority of the rooms are on the first floor and overlook the now car park. This all ties in with the fact that the original function of the hotel was once a royal livery and storage facility.
Considering the building is 3-4 hundred years old, it is a testament to the architect and builders of the day.
The official description of the hotel is “charming” and that it definitely is.
There have obviously been many changes to its life in its time and this adds to the character.

We booked a superior room and benefited from a large room with a balcony. The floor made a bit of noise, but, thankfully no room was directly below us, just a stairwell. The bed was comfortable and house cleaning was done everyday to a suitable standard.

Breakfast is in a room that at a guess must of been a restaurant at one time.
It overlooks the market, and to get one of the two window seats is a joy, to watch the hustle and bustle of a Parisian market at full pelt.
The breakfast fair is strictly French, cheese and bread, toast, lots of spreads and the croissants are the real McCoy here. Coffee, juices, yogurt and cereals finish the offerings.

The rooms are not the most luxurious in the hotel world, but they are very adequate. Couple this with its location and the Cheval Rouge is a hard hotel to beat.

stayed for 3 nights while visiting the palace. although very shabby and outdated, the room was comfortable and very convenient. It has parking, and is just 5 minutes walk from the palace. Situated in the market square - there is all the joy of a great French market and loads of cafes. The staff are helpful, breakfast good. Well worth staying there.
