I found Le Resto du Roy online a few days before our trip to Versailles, and later discovered they were mentioned in our Frommer's guide. We are SO GLAD we ate there.
First of all, it was very easy to get to. It's only a couple of blocks from the Palace (you can see the gates if you eat outside). We were there for lunch on a weekday and had no trouble getting a table.
For the most part, the food was outstanding. I had the most perfect poached egg *ever* for an appetizer. The pork tenderloin with risotto was fantastic; the ribeye with bearnaise and fries was mediocre (the bearnaise and fries were good, the steak was not very good). Dessert, however, was entirely fantastic. My husband had "Choux crème fouettée, caramel au beurre salé" which was DIVINE... basically it's a HUGE puff pastry with whipped cream and a salted caramel sauce that is TO DIE FOR. My son had creme brulee, and I had "Fondant au chocolat et pralin feuilleté", which was a molten chocolate cake in a custard sauce. All were truly amazing.
At this point in our trip we had been in France for 2 days and this was the first meal we had which truly made us feel like we were having French food. It didn't hurt that we sat outside, in the sun, under the trees, with the golden palace gates in view while we ate.
Service was very good; the waiter and waitress were very friendly and accommodated our English-speaking very well. The price was a bit high but we knew that before we got there and we were ok with it. We would definitely go back.
