A very disappointing day out. Even with a ticket the queues to go through security were ridiculous (up to an hour), then more queues to enter the buildings & very crowded once you were in. Then one uninteresting opulent room after another. The gardens are extensive, though overblown, and tiring to get around, more like a country park, with bikes & a boating lake, and endless eating establishments. The fountains are only working on certain days, which seems a rip-off. Maybe just not our sort of thing.

Unhappy experience like many of the other reviews. Looked at the website for Versailles, translated it via their wwebsitee into english, and went on a Monday only to find it closed. Many others also walking up to ticket office to discover it closed. Their website (and I've gone back to check now) does NOT say it is closed on Mondays...at least not in any obvious place. Rented carts to see the gardens, no fountains on, though they didn't,t charge, at least. Easy train trip from Paris, but dissapointing. BTW, after you discover its closed, and decide to make your way to the WCs, there! there is a little sign stating Chateau is closed on Mondays. How very odd!

We went through Versailles on a day that was extremely crowded (a Sunday afternoon in June). Although I avoid big crowds, Versailles was worth braving crowds. From the incredible outside to the hall of mirrors, it is just an awesome experience. Prepare for masses of people passing from room to room. The rooms are amazing. There are beautiful frescos on the ceilings and art everywhere. There is beauty everywhere you look. We went with a tour, and in my opinion that is a good idea since you don't need to worry about standing in a long line to get a ticket.
The gardens are spectacular. We only had 45 minutes there due to our tour. You could spend hours! Everywhere you look there are amazing statues, fountains and gardens. Supposedly there is a train to tour the gardens. If we had time, I would have loved to do this.
My 2 cents: Prepare for being in a crowd when in the palace. Take a small purse that you can hold on to.
Being part of a tour will cut your time in line.
If you love gardens, plan on a few hours just on the gardens!

I went on a Saturday morning and stood in line to go in for over an hour. Once inside, people with audio tours stood in the middle of the room listening and people had to squeeze around them. They should get a system where everyone prebooks either a morning or afternoon ticket.

The castle was absolutely beautiful though and I'd like to walk through the gardens someday.

Not only is the Palace of Versailles a beautiful attraction, the village of Versailles is charming too, so when you're done exploring the Chateau, get lost in the quaint village. When exploring the Chateau audio guides are essential, be wise and take a set of earphones along so you don't need to carry it by your ear the whole time, eventually your arm will hurt. During the winter months queues are very few and far between. There are golf carts that you can hire for for around 30euros an hour, yet they do require a drivers license, so don't make the mistake I did and leave it behind, that way you can literally explore the entire garden and drive all the way to the end, which I can imagine being quite an achievement. If I do get the opportunity to eventually go again, hiring a golf cart would be on the top of my list!
