Description: When you step into this timeless venue, you will discover a festive restaurant straight out of a storybook and the imaginary world of Asterix. The success of the well-known concept is based on a simple, but effective idea: long rows of tables, mixed salads, grills and wine served from the barrel, all in gigantic quantities. Also worth mentioning is the outstanding welcome which contributes to the friendly atmosphere. Dinner menu : 40€ Lunch menu : 14€

“Not high cuisine but fun in a group”
Reviewed October 9, 2013

Eat, drink and be merry!

That's what this place is about - it packs people in (you'll need to book) - eat as much as you like (as long as you like the starter buffet) and drink as much as you like (as long as you are happy with the house red).

They serve a massive box of veggies, 90% of which you will leave (sadly) with the starter, and you go and help yourself to the rest of the starters and the wine. There's then a limited choice of grilled meat main course which was a little overcooked for my taste (but then I like tartare so don't mind me), a decent cheeseboard, and a limited selection of desserts afterwards. You get them all.

Too noisy for great conversation - so go with a group of friends, and get the metro home afterwards.

“What a disaster !”
Reviewed October 5, 2013

I am already more than 12 years in the incentive business and going with groups to restaurants all over the world but the experience with this restaurant is out of imagination.
some examples: Red wine they serve is a disgrace for the reputation of wines in France. Just not drinkable.
Ok lets order white wine than what we have to pay extra ! Answer of the waiter ,sorry we only have one bottle left of white wine in a restaurant where minimum 200 people are staying and eating.. This is a saturday evening at 21h30 !!!
The entrecote was like chewing gum and cold.
Like this i can continue still more but i am not going to loose more time of you and myself
Just one advice . Dont spend your money in this restaurant because its a big tourist trap .
I give it one star because i can not give lower !!

“Fun place! Ancient motif, great value.”
Reviewed October 1, 2013

We were looking for La Taverne du Sergent Recruteur which we discovered many years ago, but it was recently converted to a foo-foo high priced modern restaurant, and discovered Nos Ancetres Les Gaulois right next door with a very similar concept to the old Taverne. Much has been written about this so I won't repeat, but if you enjoy a gregarious, unpretentious atmosphere that almost requires you to either come with a group or become acquainted with the people at the tables around you then you will love this place. If not, you will hate it. Unlimited salad bar with assorted sausages (see photos), huge basket of crudite, draw unlimited decent Bordeaux red wine from casks, choice of a few grilled meats for the main course and a beautiful cheese platter and choice of dessert, none of which would satisfy a gourmand, but accompanied by a wandering minstrel (Digby was there this time) to make for a fun evening. The hosts and servers were delightful, spoke excellent English, and seemed to really care about our satisfaction with everything. We were seated between a table of 6 Americans and a couple from the U.K., and we all became good friends before the evening ended. Definitely a unique kind of experience.

“A must do in good company”
Reviewed August 18, 2013

Just fun. You get to eat and drink well without any specific culinary Delight, but it just has a good atmosphere.
Basis concept is that of an ancient Gaul place to eat.
Cut your own vegetables to make salad, visit the buffet for sausages, a peice of grilled meat with roasted potato, good selection of cheese and choice of dessert. All with good Bordeaux red win for a fixed price (40 EUR).

“A Unique Step Into The Past”
Reviewed August 2, 2013

with a touch of historical life. Have lunch at 'Nos Ancetres les Gaulois', to enjoy the same basic yet succulent menu that pre-roman gallic tribes served. A typical basket of raw fresh vegetables is served on each thick, oakwood table as in the ancient world.
The restaurant is an old 13 century horse stable made from stones. A unique place.
