Description: Le Petit Marguery restaurant in Paris' Port-Royal quarter has the soul of a traditional French neighbourhood restaurant of a century ago. The mirrors and columns, fresh flowers, the layers of white table linen, the long-aproned waiters in their waistcoats and bow ties, the dark rose colour scheme create a cosy, comfortable and quite smart milieu.

“A very nice dinner, just a few things to change...”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 7, 2013

The dining room is very elegant and he tables are nicely appointed. Maybe it would be nice to have butter in the butter dish, the same set of glasses and cutlery but apart from that, it was a good start.

The food was nicely prepared and elegantly presented. A few more vegies wouldn't be too much asking though. I had the doe with quenelles of purée. All very good but lacking in side dishes.

The service was very good but I always feel bad when I have to help myself with wine in a restaurant where the waiter should be attentive to this kind of details. No bread with the starter, the wine arrived with the main course, ... A few things to pay attention to.

The dessert was a gand experience: a chocolate globe atop a chocolate mousse tart. The waiter poured some hot praliné sauce over the globe that melted, showing the pastry underneath. Nice touch!

A very nice restaurant with a few things to change but a definite recommendation.

“Don't miss this place”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 19, 2013

In a district where prices are awfully high (le quartier de l'Etoile), I have found by random a place which is interesting to know : Au petit Marguery. This place recently changed of owner and it means there is a challenge for the new team. Taking into account their proposal, it would be very unfair they did not acheive it : for 41 one euros, I had a complete meal with a starter a main course and a postry (wine and coffee included). The food is traditional and very tasty typical of French Parisian brasserie style (at one hundred meters distance their is a very famous one which would not give you this quality for the double of the price).

“A novel Christmas Eve”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 6, 2013

We spent a wonderful Christmas Eve having a greta meal here! It was a fixed menu and they did a wonderful job pampering the customers. We started with champagne, scallops and foie gras, turbot and finished with souffle. What a treat! The service was really nice and the experience worth repeating!

“Tasty food - classic experience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 2, 2013

I had lunch at Petit Marguery the other day; overall this was a positive experience.

We booked a table for 2 through lafourchette.com. This meant we got a discount on the €35 lunch menu, which was nice (and we did not have to ask for it, it was automatically applied to our bill). The menu is good value but most of the main courses come with a €8 or €10 supplement: this makes the discount really worth it.

We both had the foie gras as starters. I can tell it was home-made and definitely tasty.

I then had scallops as my main course which came with a nice risotto. My guest had meat which was lovely.

The dessert was disappointing: the apple tart was good but nothing to rave about. My guest tried the grand marnier souffle and said it was very good.

We had a nice glass of red wine too (drink in moderation).

Overall, the atmosphere is good but service should be more simple. Waiters give themselves this air of importance that is really unnecessary. This is a simple bistro with reliable and tasty French cuisine. Nothing more. Also, the €35 menu is worth it but adding a €8 or €10 supplement for your main course is really questionable. I do not think the supplements are worth it and I am glad the discount made up for them.

“proper bistrot with amazing grand marnier souffle”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 30, 2012

I always enjoy going for dinner or lunch to au petit marguery. The dishes are solid, no new inventive cuisine here, rather one gets the classics properly done. They have been putting more game on the menu, for example one can get hare rather than rabbit. To my taste, the gameyness of the hare is overwhelmed by the heavy sauce that comes with this dish, but some would like the strong flavors. The lamb, duck and other more traditional dishes are great and, I must say, that they serve my favorite grand marnier souffle in Paris (maybe anywhere). Unlike many restaurants that make a plain souffle and then add the liquor, au petit marguery has perfected a true souffle that contains the flavor through and through without making it soggy by adding liquid. The atmosphere is a 1920's type setting with brass and banquettes. Always a solid meal at a very reasonable price. Wine menu is more than sufficient. Probably best to make reservations.
