“Updated, now, and still delicious...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 7, 2013

We've enjoyed visiting Le Palanquin for lunch or dinner for a number of years, now, and have always found it a dependable place for good eats and a nice change of cuisines. Today at lunch we were very pleased to see that the restaurant's decor has been freshened up and the menu updated a bit as well. The same friendly people provide a warm welcome an well-organized service, but our dishes (nems and croustillant des crevettes (roughly, *superb* large won-ton shrimp) to start, roast duck and pork dishes, and cantonese rice seemed even better than we'd recalled from past visits. Vietnamese cuisine (in many ways a merger of Chinese and French, with both sides coming out the winner) is on offer in many places in Paris, but Le Palanquin remains a favorite with us -- the more so, now, that the restaurant itself has been spiffed up a bit. Needless to say, we look forward to returning...

“Good but pricey”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 28, 2013

This is a modestly upscale establishment with seemingly a loyal local clientele. Located on a narrow St. Germain street and wedged between a couple of noisy bars, you'd think it would be better value but this is Paris. The food was fresh, tasty and well prepared. Portions, however, were not overly generous. We had enjoyed one starter, one soup, one main, one bowl of rice, one dessert, and a bottle of wine for US$86. The proprietors are unable to communicate well in English. Don't expect they'll accommodate you at a larger table even if one is available. Two people are expected to sit at a small table for two (even if one is a 6'5" American...or maybe because of). Also check your bill for accuracy as we were overcharged.

“Cozy, Friendly, and Excellent Food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 21, 2011

An appreciated break from the standard French fair, this side street French Vietnamese did was much better than some of the review here would suggest. The Soupe Saigonese and fresh steamed pork dumplings were as good as any we've had anywhere else in the world. Similarly the grilled duck and pork entrees were an well spiced and not over sauced. The flan, banana beignet , and Vietnamese confections made for excellent concluding notes. Lovely attentive service rounded out this excellent meal.

“authentic experience”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 19, 2010

The interior of the restaurant is quaint - old parisian building with low, dark beams. Tables are squashed together in true city style, so you can either whisper to your dinner companion if you do not wish to be overheard, or tune in freely to other's chatter! The food was freshly prepared, the fresh springroll (Rouloux de printemps) was lovely, as were the steamed dumplings. The starter portion of the dumplings were really generous. The cantonese rice was not the real thing (no peas and little cubes of ham) but still tasty. The vietnamese cocktail was sadly not the real thing as they substituted the rice wine with martini blanco. A good experience all round, but are betters to be found close-by.

“Viet-damn that was a tasty meal!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 29, 2010

Ok, you're in Paris for French food but after a few days of bread, cheese, beef, duck, pate, sausage and more cheese you may need a break. If you like the flavors of Saigon you may want to give this little family restaurant a whirl. The fresh taste of cilantro, chili, crisp vegetables and lean grilled meats will have you fit and ready for more traditional Parisian fare in no time. As usual the set meals are the best deal and be sure to try the soup.
