“A wonderful moment. Thank you, L'Astrance...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 1, 2012

My son Charles and I had lunch at l’Astrance in celebration of his birthday. He had never been in a three star restaurant. L’Astrance was the right choice: its lunch menu (especially with the wine) is by far the cheapest in the rarefied circle of Michelin three star establishments, the dining room is small (25 seats) and cozy, and the experience on offer is to create a creative and sensory communion between the guests and hosts: there is no carte, you just choose the number of dishes you would like to taste. In other words, we were in the right hands.

We were greeted by Christophe Rohat, chef Pascal Barbot’s accomplice since their days at L’Arpège ten years ago. Rohat reigns over an efficient yet agreeable staff in the elegant dining room. I immediately felt that we were in a place uncompromisingly committed to perfection. After a glass of champagne, we chose the cheapest (or less expensive…) proposition, Le Menu Déjeuner: entrée, three dishes (two fish, one meat), desserts, with four half glasses of wines. An amazing value.

The food – described in luscious detail by many other reviewers – was perfectly prepared, cooked and presented. The combination of flavors, the presentation, the “appareil” (technical assembly) of each plate or dish created a symphonic experience. The wine/dish matching was a fascinating part of this experience. Sommelier Alexandre Jean’s selection was the pursuit of truth. It was all about wine, not labels. Bravo…

Charles and I had a lovely time and a spiriting conversation. We mused about the joy of giving and receiving, about ephemeral art, incarnated by this wonderful lunch, as if it had been a live concert. Who enjoys it more: the artist or the audience? Can one exist without the other? After such an experience, we agreed that we should simply be thankful that reality can includes such wonderful moments.

“Great lunch”

Food was spectacular and the space is well appointed. The price for the 5 course tasting was acceptable. Service was spot on. Would definitely recommend.

“Perfection”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 20, 2012

L'Astrance is superb. We chose the 'Dejeuner du jour' menu and were overwhelmed: just when we thought we'd had the ultimate amazing course.... the next one which was as good, or better. They aim to surprise: there is no menu and after being asked if you have any food dislikes or allergies the food is served. You don't know what's coming next and I loved the element of surprise and the creative mixing of exotic Asian ingredients and flavours. It would be impossible to choose a favourite course as they were all so different and exciting yet blended perfectly. Paired with an Alsace Riesling, a lovely room and friendly well- paced service........it was perfection.

“The best surprise menu in Paris”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 28, 2011

The surprise menu, 5 or 6 courses, is an outstanding value. You will get magnificent dishes you might not think to order on a printed menu. An example today - we had an oyster, with scallops, cabbage, yuzu. Another course was fish with white wasabi. Still another was an exceptional chicken with foie gras stuffing.

We have been going to Astrance for special occasions since it opened, usually at lunch, when the menus are a bit cheaper. But it is always worth the money.

The service is excellent, every dish is decribed in detail in French or English.
