“A trap for tourists”
Reviewed June 4, 2013

I visited Chartier many years ago and I went back expecting the same great Parisian experience but, what a disappointment! After having waited 45 minutes in a queue on the pavement outside the restaurant, we were finally seated at a table to small for our group and were attended by a very unhelpful waitress. Our food was horrendous, barely lukewarm and completely tasteless. The service was very poor throughout. Avoid at all cost, there are lots of other good restaurant in Paris.

“A great night out”
Reviewed June 4, 2013

We went feeling a little apprehensive given the recent mixed reviews but can happily report a most enjoyable evening. It might not be haute cuisine but where else can a family get a "French" cuisine experience complete with escagot and a bottle of wine for less than 70 Euro? The waiter wrote our order on our tablecloth and then proceeded to manually add up the bill at the end of the night which was hilarious. It helped that we went at 5.40pm so there were no queues and we got efficient service. Go with an open mind and you won't be dissappointed!

“Jamie Oliver - your services are required!!”
Reviewed June 4, 2013

'I've had better school dinners than this!' was daughters comment after eating here.'I can't believe we waited an hour in a queue for that!' was her sister's. Like a previous respondent, I too had visited Chartier's in my youth and remembered it as a place full of character, with good value wholesome food. How times change! We were crammed into a table behind the waiter's serving area with barely enough room to pick up our cutlery. Waiter was very rude and both his apron and the tea towel over his arm were filthy. Our carafe d'eau was a greasy old wine bottle. I was seriously concerned we were all going to be ill after drinking from it. Only good thing was the Kir which like our bread, the charming waiter cleared from the table before I had finished it. He obviously wanted us out as quickly as possible - customer satisfaction not a priority - why does it need to be when there are another 100 people behind you in the queue waiting to get in? Any character the place had was completely overshadowed by our appalling gastronomic experience. Only go here if you enjoy dreadful food, rude waiters, dirty surroundings and standing in queues.

“Third Time here - just as good as ever!”
Reviewed June 1, 2013

Taking youngest daughter to Paris for the first time had to include 'the Chartier experience'. Walked straight in early evening (despite the fact that Paris was busy with lots of half-term visitors from UK). Waiter was very friendly and very apologetic when he dropped daughter's starter of crevettes! Had an excellent plate of lamb chops for main meal cooked to perfection and starter of sausages and ham was very tasty. Had a lovely couple of local ladies on our table who actually encouraged my daughter (12) into some French conversation. All in all yet another wonderful trip to a place that is a step back in time. Not to be missed!

“The real Paris!”
Reviewed May 31, 2013

I'm disappointed to read some really bad reviews. My family and I went here two days in a row.
It was excellent. I found the staff to be overworked, maybe this is why they are so unhappy.
The gentleman in the suit who directed us to our table was very nice. The decor is like something you would see on "Midnight in Paris". It's wonderful inside, very Parisian! The food was great, we had no reason to complain. The bread was wonderful....the wine was €2 a glass...which came in a larger bottle than I expected. If your looking for a quiet place to talk...please go elsewhere. My mother couldn't believe the noise level of the talking (and she's supposed to be deaf....she's never lived it down since). Give it a try. Well worth it!
